Raven's Rest Cemetery - NO CC
I was not. I have been. I am not. I do not mind. -Epicurus |
The living come with grassy tread To read the gravestones on the hill; The graveyard draws the living still, But never anymore the dead. The verses in it say and say: "The ones who living come today To read the stones and go away Tomorrow dead will come to stay." So sure of death the marbles rhyme, Yet can't help marking all the time How no one dead will seem to come. What is it men are shrinking from? It would be easy to be clever And tell the stones: Men hate to die And have stopped dying now forever. I think they would believe the lie. -Robert Frost, "In A Disused Graveyard" |
Death is nothing at all I have only slipped away into the next room I am I and you are you Whatever we were to each other That we are still Call me by my old familiar name Speak to me in the easy way you always used Put no difference into your tone Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow Laugh as we always laughed At the little jokes we always enjoyed together Play, smile, think of me, pray for me Let my name be ever the household word that it always was Let it be spoken without effort Without the ghost of a shadow in it Life means all that it ever meant It is the same as it ever was There is absolute unbroken continuity What is death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind Because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you for an interval Somewhere very near Just around the corner All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost One brief moment and all will be as it was before How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again! Henry Scott Holland, "Death is Nothing At All" |
When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no tears in a gloom filled room Why cry for a soul set free Miss me a little but not too long And not with your head bowed low Remember the love that once we shared Miss me - but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take And for each must go alone It's all a part of a bigger plan A step on the road to home And when you are lonely and sick of heart Go to the friends we know And bury your tears in their loving arms Miss me - but let me go. -Anonymous |
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and the sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, "There she goes." Gone where? Gone from my sight... that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There she goes", there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!" -Henry Van Dyke, "Parable on Immortality" |
In the cemetery of Pere-Lachaise, in the vicinity of the common grave, far from the elegant quarter of that city of sepulchers, far from all the tombs of fancy which display in the presence of eternity all the hideous fashions of death, in a deserted corner, beside an old wall, beneath a great yew-tree over which climbs the wild convolvulus, amid dandelions and mosses, there lies a stone. That stone is no more exempt than others from the leprosy of time, of dampness, of the lichens and from the defilement of the birds. The water turns it green, the air blackens it. It is not near any path, and people are not fond of walking in that direction, because the grass is high and their feet are immediately wet. When there is a little sunshine, the lizards come thither. All around there is a quivering of weeds. In the spring, linnets warble in the trees. The stone is perfectly plain. In cutting it the only thought was the requirements of the tomb, and no other care was taken than to make the stone long enough and narrow enough to cover a man. No name is to be read there. Only, many years ago, a hand wrote upon it in pencil these four lines, which have become gradually illegible beneath the rain and the dust, and which are, to-day, probably effaced: He sleeps. Although his fate was very strange, he lived. He died when he no longer had his angel. The thing came to pass simply, of itself, as the night comes when day is gone. -Victor Hugo, "Les Miserables" |
Some graveyards are gloomy and haunting places, where one feels the presence of vampires and ghouls more acutely than the presence of one's departed loved ones.
Others are like this, where over centuries, the deceased have come to populate a cemetery even more densely than the living in the city around them. Crowded with memorials and monuments, many adorned with flowers and candles in memory of the dead, this cemetery conveys a sense of peace, allowing Sims a moment to connect with their loved ones who have passed beyond the veil of this world. (There's a reason I chose to take these photos during the day, even though a Gothic cemetery is so wonderfully evocative at night! )
Of course, this being a lot for upload, there are currently no Sims actually interred on this lot, so there's plenty of space for yours!
Many of the smaller memorials are naught but decoration, though if you look at the Pere-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, you will see just how densely packed the memorials are, so while the lot is already quite crowded, even simply along the paths and avenues of the cemetery there is plenty of space available for headstones to be placed. There are also many many tombs, crypts, and columbaria in which there is plenty of space for generation after generation of cremains to be placed, with each family having their own monument. There are also several small plots for more traditional flower-covered graves, or above-ground tombs for those Sims wealthy enough to afford it.
The most space is to be found in the catacombs beneath the chapel and the two largest columbaria, however. Hundreds of square feet beneath the earth for sarcophagi and urns to be placed, with the crypts beneath the central chapel having many small niches for the poorer families who still desire to inter their loved ones in this cemetery.
For the living, there is little this lot has to offer beyond a place to feel the presence of those who have gone before them. Many of the memorials are beautiful artworks in their own right, and as the cemetery is filled, there will be many graves at which to pay their respects, and the chapel atop the central hill has a small congregation hall inside, for funeral services or reflections on the fleeting nature of existence.
And of course, now to the technical details of the lot. As uploaded, it is zoned as residential, because although I imagine that most of you will want to re-zone it as a community lot, there were many who expressed interest in being able to convert it into a lair for vampires or werewolves or other supernatural Sims, and it is much easier to convert a residential lot into a community one than vice-versa. There's also no denying that this is a big lot, at 5x6 and more than $1,000,000 worth of structures and decorations (those Grey Woman of Sim City sculptures really add up! ), so although I imagine many of you may not spend much time actually playing this lot, be aware that it is a big file for your computer to handle! I did playtest a clone of this, mostly just confirming that Sims can walk everywhere it seems that they should be able to (and they can). There are a handful of crypts in which the far back recesses may be inaccessible, but by the time you have so many cremains that you'd need to utilize that space, I cannot imagine all of the deceased still having living relatives who come by to mourn! (OK, so it's a practical concern for which my justification seems a little cold-hearted, but real-world cemeteries have this as a real concern! The Pere-Lachaise cemetery in Paris on which this is most heavily based actually sells most of its burial plots on a temporary basis today, so your "eternal rest" may not be quite so restful as you'd hope! )
I think that covers everything, so let me know if you have any problems with this lot, and I'll try to fix them, and of course, I hope that your Sims are able to find peace beyond this mortal coil!

About Me
You might call me a CC-atheist. While I'll use every cheat code in the book, I won't use anything that Maxis didn't ship with the game in one fashion or another. Ergo, you can rest assured that all my lots are CC-free.
Some creators describe themselves as constantly juggling projects. I suppose I do that too, except I'm really really bad at juggling, so I just throw lots of projects as high as I can, and sometimes forget all about them until they come crashing down on my head!
I won't *exactly* do requests, but since I pivot from lot to lot constantly, if there's a place you hope to see from me, there's a good chance that I've already started it! I make no promises, but feel free to ask about lots you want to see- you might inspire me to finish something!
My lots are my own work- I put a lot of effort into them, so have fun with them, use them for storytelling or making Sim movies, but please don't reupload them, in whole or in part, anywhere, including here on MTS!
One day I will rule the world with an iron fist and all will kneel before me.
