Hmm.. The object is the parrot (I'm using the actual bird, not the cage- I went in to find the cage in I think the Unknown section? One of thise Misc ones ) I couldn't find it at first, but I found a thread about them by searching which led me to the actual bird textures.

I'm afraid I don't understand much of what you're saying here ![]() |
Sae^2,
you picked the parrot from "Persons", where some other NPCs are listed, right? So actually you didn't try to recolor an "object" but a "not playable character" and this works different. Maybe someone from the body shop experts or an experienced modder know how to create a working recolor option for the parrot - did someone already try? As Numenor and Boblishman created "Bender" they might know how it works ![]() |

I think that Sae Sae has read the post where I've explained where to find the recolourable bird; but anyway, let me explain it better.
There are several entries in the Object Workshop list related to the birds: 1) General -> Pets -> "Tropico Avian Sanctuary" (0x7FFAC714): this is the cage; it's recolourable but it's not what interests Sae Sae, so ignore this entry. 2) Other -> Persons -> "NPC - Bird" (7FAFAB15): this is NOT a recolourable object, it contains only the behaviour functions that animate the bird; ignore this entry. 3) Unknown -> ""Tropico Avian Sanctuary" (0x7F58E5A0): this is the actual recolourable bird, select this entry. When you click "Next", in the Object Workshop, you should see the Subset Selection as shown in the attached screenshot. |
Yes, Numenor is correct ) I started over (instead of loading from the package I had made before) with the same options and I managed to get it the files to show up, somehow.
It seems that whenever I try to load at the first page on the object workshop (instead of just start), it bugs up and likes to freeze alot. In any case, it's coming along nicely now- Thanks for the help! ![]() |
Hi Numenor thanks for this great tutorial!
I 'm completely clueless as to how to recolor a custom object so when i click open where do i find the object i want to recolor?Do i open the downloads folder? Thanks in advance Corvi |
You can open it from the Downloads folder if that's where to file is, or anywhere where it is.
|
Ok thank you! I just opened it and in contrary to the example by Numenor it has one billion texture images etc i'm very confused can i say details about which object i want to recolor and someone help me?
It's a window by www.marinasims.net the Classic Large Window with Round Pediment and balcony and i want the whole thing to have the same texture with thw window pane , wood that is.I know i could request it but i want to try it myself :-) |
Hi Corvi!
This happened from time to time to me when I wanted to clone an object, too. I guess this is a SimPe bug and I fixed it with moving the file to a different folder (like Desktop/Clone) and in SimPe I changed accesing the downloads-folder to accessing this one folder only. It works. Maybe there are easier ways but for me nothing else helped to prevent SimPe putting tons of other wrong textures into a package (also choose the file directly didn't help). |
Oh i see i 'll try that, thank you!
edit:it's still the same , from what i understand it shows all 3 recolors of the frame that already are in the game so do i just pick one of them and recolor , will it matter? there are also different sizes for each image of the frame starting from a 1x1 to a 512x512 i guess i pick the 512 lol If anyone is willing to download this window and guide me a little further i would appreciate it. |
corvidophile2,
The different sizes of the textures are called mip-map... Just some intermediate textures for various sizes to help reduce the computation process when the object surface is zoomed in or out... The build DDS option can already take care all of these textures, so just use the largest-sized texture for recolouring. As for the 3 choices for a subset, just select the one you find easiest for you to recolour with a graphical programme, and then click OK. |
Thank you niol for clarifying this ! I'll go experiment and see what i come up with ;-)
edit:after 3 failed attempts i did it! yay so excited! it came out exactly how i wanted it to.I recolored a staircase also lol THANKS so much for this tutorial and for the help everyone. Corvi |
I'm Guesing That I can't recolour
I suck! Ive done the tutorial and I made the lamp from Green, to green strypes. what happend when i tryed it was it came up with the little picture of it and i placed it into the room and When i zoomed into it it faded (lol, ODVIOUSLY) so I belived it was normal for that to happen and moved onto a Bed. Now i did EXACILY as you sed and it never showd up ![]() i was so annoyed. Can you help me? |
PETCHY14, did you recolor a bed frame or bedding? If you recolor bedding, you have to recolor the bedding in the Ironwood double bed, because that's where all the beds take their bedding textures from.

I'm stuck on the subset selection thing...maybe a picture doesn't need it and - if it doesn't - I go onto the click plugin part and I can't find it at the bottom. I've even tried getting the plugin view from the "Window" column.
I have downloaded and placed the NVidea (or however it's spelled) and placed it so it knows where it is after I told it where it was. I have the newest version, the updated Pets one (v0.6b I think). I have Downloaded all the other stuff you need to run this program. I have even downloaded the tutorial as the computer I use for internet can't run the Sims 2. And, I have also added your color enable package as I have lightly mentioned ^. I am recoloring a picture so I'm pretty sure it won't need the subset selection. Please help, any insight would be greatly appreciated, ~Chris ![]() |
The "Plugin" button shown in the picture is now labeled "Plugin View". If you can't see it, try resetting the layout: go to Extra -> Preferences -> SimPE Settings and click "Reset Layout".
|
i couldn't find a chocolate brown reodisplay cabinet...so i used this and created my own and i feel so proud of myself because even with ts1, i used simpe, but only to modify sims, not create anything..so yay me!
|
Numenor (or just anyone that wants to answer this),
Ok, you confirmed what I thought. But, still, nothing shows up in the plugin view or resource tree. I was a little farther than what I'd thought. Just not very much. Please enlighten me, ~Chris ![]() |
Probably you have already tried these steps.........
When you open a package file to simpe make sure that in the tab "Resource Tree" you are in "by type" view......try to click on the "T" you can see in the tab Resource Tree on the left top ( there are 3 button T=by Type; G=by Group; I=by Instance). You must see in the Resource tree all the files. Click on "Texture Image (TXTR)" than in the tab "Resource List" (on the left) click on one of the files you see to select. Now click the "Plugin View" ( you must click on it) and you can see the texture you are selected before in the Resource List. To reset the layout with the last version of Simpe you can click on the relative icon on the bar (the last who shows a white circle full in blue). |
Bad news, I have checked that it was on the "T" button... and I've also tried reseting the layout on the preferences.

Poopedapple, can you please post a screenshot?
|
I'm having a little trouble again...I'm recoloring a custom painting and although i used a 512x512 texture (the same as the original) in game the texture is not whole. It appears just a part of it and i don't get it.I know this is probably something obvious i'm missing (like usually) so i'm hoping for a little help!
Thanks in advance edit:does it have to do with mipmaps? If so do i have to make the recolors from scratch or can i edit the existing ones by adding mipmaps? In a 512x512 i have to do mipmaps up to 64 also? |
You only need to make the biggest texture (like 512 x 512 in this case), and then either update all sizes when you import it, which creates the other mipmaps, or use Build DXT which updates all sizes differently. You can create the texture from scratch as long as it's the right size and right format (png).
|
HI IgnorantBliss i made the biggest texture and used build DXT, s o what did i do wrong? And it was png :-(
edit: i will try using the import-update all sizes method then. |
What do you mean by "it appears just the part of it"? Can you post a screenshot?
|
I dont have a screenshot handy, it is like cropped! For example let's say i have used a whole face pic and in game it shows half the face or eyes only , although i used a 512 texture.Reading again the first post and the others by Numenor i believe it is caused by the image having lot of contrasts like in black and white pink etc ? So that's why i referred to mipmaps.
