I read Holes a couple of years ago for school too, wasn't my favourite book to read from what i remember about it but it was alright.

I gave up on trying to read Stephen Kings "The Shining" normally i can read a novel in one or two days but i only managed 5 chaters over a week and just couldn't make myself carry on, which is a first for me.

So now i have nothing to read, might go to the library later this afternoon and get another lot of books out to read, wouldn't mind reading Little Lord Fauntleroy, Little Princess by Frances Hodgeson Burnett or the secret garden again, Have any of you read either of those books? I love them, amazing writing, and by far beats alot of modern cliche stories today.

Right .. off to the library then

Geah 25th Nov 2009 5:04 AM

I now have all three of those books inmy hot little hands, so now i can say I'm reading A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

meggie272 25th Nov 2009 9:01 AM

^^ I loved The Secret Garden. Never really liked The Little Princess.

"Making Money" by Terry Pratchett.

And "Eragon" when I can be bothered. It's getting really boring.

Rabid 3rd Dec 2009 12:28 AM

"For the Relief of Unbearable Urges," by Nathan Englander, "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay," by Michael Chabon, the collected stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer, and re-reading my absolute favorite book "Everything is Illuminated," by Jonathan Safran Foer. I'm doing a research paper on magical realism in Jewish fiction and am casting my net very wide .

Dreamydre 4th Dec 2009 5:57 AM

We finished reading "Of Mice and Men" in English today. The ending was so sad, it made me wanna cry. Poor Lennie =(

Geah 4th Dec 2009 10:16 AM

well i was reading the secret garden and proceeded to forget it at my friends house the other day, so she took it and read it al and i have to wait to go back and get it, in the mean time, i got out a random lil book today, part of a series i've never heard of called Alex unlimited .. and this book is called split-second sight .. kind of a weird book, took awhile to get moving and then you can tell that the author is male by some of the things he uses to describe the women and what he makes them say o.O .. I finished the whole thing in afew hours though, overall an alright book but not really my cup of Milo (hate tea so there Lol)

i absolutley love The little princess, but then i absolutley love Little lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden too.

I find Sara Crewe's story so intriguing and the story always left me thinking about what happened after the book was over, and imagining different things that would happen. And how Mrs Burnett potrays all of the characters, you can really imagine them and they seem to come alive in your mind.

crazycentralgurl 4th Dec 2009 11:30 PM

Twilight..
I have no idea why I'm reading it again, perhaps I have nothing better to do with my life.
Next: Impulse by Ellen Hopkins

"A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle.

Geah 17th Dec 2009 7:44 AM

'Outlander' by Diana Gabaldon (UK publishers called it Cross Stich though) .. OMG this book is amazing! it's based in 1945 and then way back in 1743 and it is absolutley perfectly written, my stepdad gave it to me to try last night and i really can't put it down! It's the first in what is a series of 7 books so far.

The Blurb on the cover:
The year is 1945. Clair Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honey-moon--when she innocently touches a boulder in oe of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach-an "outlander"- in a Scotland torn by war and rading border clans in the year of Our Lord...1743.

Hurtled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life..and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconciliable lives.

I'm 335 pages in, so about another 300 pages to go, and I tottaly reccomend this book to everyone. (:

crazycentralgurl 17th Dec 2009 8:31 PM

I just got done reading "Go Ask Alice"
It was sooo good.

meggie272 18th Dec 2009 3:49 AM

Geah 18th Dec 2009 11:03 AM

"Nightlight" (Twilight parody, not sure who the author is) it's extremely funny, and I'm beginning to question Twilight more and more now.

meggie272 31st Dec 2009 6:12 AM

^^ MY GOD I LOVE THAT BOOK!
Me and my friends were reading it and laughing. And laughing. And laughing. My favourite bit is the "How did you know my name was Bella!?" part.

lethifold 6th Jan 2010 2:50 AM

I just finished "Her Fearful Symmetry," by Audrey Niffenegger, and now I'm on the hunt for something new. Until I find another novel, I'll just amuse myself with the work of John Keats, I suppose.

meggie272 6th Jan 2010 7:16 AM

The last few pages of "The High King", by Lloyd Alexander. Anyone else read any of the Taran books?

Geah 6th Jan 2010 8:29 AM

Started the 6th book of that Outlander Series yesterday so am reading that now, this one's called A breat of snow and ashes and so far its absolutley brilliant as are the rest of the books (155 pages in btw) tottaly reccomend these books to anyone with an interest in one or more of history, scotland, the american revolution, the bonnie 'prince' Charlie, the battle at Culloden , romance, time travelling etc .. absolute perfection! I can't stop raving about em and can hardly manage to put the books down at all ..

Geah 6th Jan 2010 8:30 AM

^^ What are the Taran books about?

meggie272 6th Jan 2010 9:24 AM

^^Well, have you seen the Disney movie, The Black Cauldron? That is - albeit a stuffed up and extremely bad - adaption of the first two Taran books.

If you haven't, their official name is the Chronicles of Prydain. They're quite typical swords-and-sourcery, Lord of the Rings type fantasy that I would roll my eyes at, IF the author wasn't so good at fleshing out characters, making them original and different from every other fantasy novel out there *coughEragoncough*.

The plotline spans over 6 books and focuses on the Assistant Pig-Keeper of a farm, Taran of Caer Dallben.

Okay, prosy review over

"The Bostonians," by Henry James and "Main Street," by Sinclair Lewis.

meggie272 17th Jan 2010 10:32 AM

"Inheritance" by Christopher Paolini.

Okay, so I'm not really into Eragon. It's ridiculously cliched, yadda yadda, and I don't think it's worth all the hype around it. And Arya drives me around the bend up the wall crazy.

But Mr. Paolini's skill in writing is definitely improving. I'm actually sensing atmosphere now.

And my god. Roran and Katrina. :lovestruc Need I say any more?

meggie272 24th Jan 2010 4:18 AM

Finishing off Inheritance, and I'm also re-reading Seventh Heaven, by Meg Cabot. OK, her books are really glitzy and teeny-boppy, but I do like her. At least she can create interesting and original characters, unlike a lot of popular teen fiction out there.

Reading Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clothier. Much lighter dog reading than the stuff on variable reinforcement schedules I've been reading lately! There's only so much technical ethology stuff I can take.

Rabid 20th Feb 2010 11:26 PM

"The English Patient," by Michael Ondaatje, and rereading "The Silmarilion," by J.R.R. Tolkien. I try to always be reading something contemporary and something classic.

Zela 23rd Feb 2010 7:55 PM

I read the Adrian Mole books years ago and LOVED them! They're just so funny, the way he tries to thinks of himself as an intellectual but is a bit dim a lot of the time is hilarious. I really should read them again.

I'm halfway through The Shining (need to keep going with that), a few chapters into 1984, a few pages into Fatal Voyage by Kathy Reichs, I also started The Host by SMeyer (mainly to see if it was any better than Twilight, but haven't got far). I keep picking books up and starting them then moving onto something else without finishing the previous one. I finished The Lovely Bones this morning; that was good, very sad but not in a weepy way.

Shiver, by Maggie Stiefvater. It is an amazing book. I'm addicted! It sort reminds me of twilight with the whole girl falls in love with supernatural boy thing. Except twilight is horrible and this book is fantastic! Unlike twilight, it has a wonderful, exciting plot, likeable characters and the writing is actually good. In the past 24 hrs i have read 340 pages of the 370-390 page book (cant remember exactly) and i have been at school for twelve of those hours, plus 4 hrs for getting to and from school
