Solaria, :D
stacyrings, Then, quite likely the pinting modded object is not enabled for recolouring... Since you want to recolour it for yourself only, may read this and that to enable recolouring for the modded object. Yet, you can still make different copies of the modded objects with different painting textures with recolouring skills, and choose one for every game start. |
Thank you for the tutorial! I only have one question. While I was practicing recoloring the lampshade, I found I couldn't click on the "Texture Image" link under the Resource Tree, even though I had checked the shades (I unchecked the lamp post part) and had four working recolors already. It would only let me recolor the shade in its "off" position, not the "on" texture. Is that supposed to happen? :/
Thanks again. |
Noobish Question From The Noob
![]() ![]() I'm trying to recolour that SAME lamp. I followed everything correctly, but when I right click I can't select Build 'DXT...' Sorry if this question sounds noobish. -Blushes- ![]() ![]() |
Nevermind.
I thank Tekku for asking the question that I wanted to know. And Yeah... I thought I downloaded them o.O |

Sorry if this has been asked already (it probably hasn't) But at the end of the tut you say: 'Copy the package into the downloads folder and fire up the game' Umm which bit am i actually copying and saving?? Once i've hit commit and ok isn't it automatically in the game when i open it?
I'm sorry but everything else i understood perfectly, well considering this is my first recol and it was a CC rug which was quite different, until i come to this part. Is the file i'm supposed to copy in the resource list somewhere? or the TXTR Editor bit? Am i even in the right section to copy? I'm in plug-in veiw? So sorry numeror but i'm confused |
In the beginning of the tutorial you create a package file and give it a name. If you saved it directly into your Downloads folder, then it's there already, but otherwise you will have to move it there. The package file is the one you need to have in your Downloads folder
![]() |
Ohh you mean the original file i recoloured? So that stays exactly the same?
And if that's so could i make say 4 recolours of the same objects at the same time? And just import each one as i go? |
I'm not completely sure you mean by "stays exactly the same". When you make changes to the package during the tutorial, mainly importing the new texture, the package is saved to keep the changes. In any case, it's that same package file all the time.
Yes, you can make several recolors in a row. Just make sure you repeat the same steps for each of them from the beginning. Create first package, import texture, save, then create a whole new package again, import a different texture, and so on. |
Ok I know what i did wrong but i'm still having probs. (Thanks for helping me btw
![]() I didn't actually save after i commited *slaps forehead* Because i clicked ok after commiting i absent mindedly thought i was saving....Anyhow when i closed simPE it asked me if i wanted to save (this is how i realized my mistake) and i said yes. It saved it as a .bak file which i placed in my downloads folder along with the original file and it doesn't show the recolour. Can you see where i may have done something wrong here? Have i saved it the wrong way somehow? |
To starwyn - When you click save, two save files will be created with the same name in whichever directory you saved them to, (one as a .bak and one as a .package) For example, if you named the file "desk" when saving, the two save files would be called "desk.package" and "desk.bak". You must move the package file into the Downloads folder, not the bak. (The .bak file is not needed, you can simply delete it with no problems).
You just have to be careful not to use the wrong file, which is an easy mistake to make since the names are similar ![]() |
If you committed your changes and then saved in the end when prompted, it should be fine. With the .bak file, it's a back-up file that SimPE automatically creates. It can be turned into a functional package file by just changing the extension to ".package", but it doesn't contain your latest saved changes. I personally have the back-up system turned off (in SimPE Settings under Preferences), no bak files are created at all.

So i'm supposed to choose 'save as'?
Ok I'll give it another go and see if i can find where i've gone wrong. I'm trying to recol that orange rug from 4ESF. I probably should have started with a maxis item first but i'm too eager lol. And i usuallyneed to load my game while i watch a TV show or do housework since i takes around half an hour to load the game to test my recolour. Thankyou VERY much for your help so far ![]() |
No, you don't need to do Save As, just Save in the end, as in the beginning of the tutorial you give the package a name already
![]() |
In my practices, I normally "save as" a new package for every new change. I may name the new change d package along with the change I've made.
So, when I wanna go back or re-analyse what I had done. I wouldn't easily get lost. When I wanna switch back to an earlier version, I can simply re-use an old clone. hee hee, I've learnt that in a biol lab, so I'm not the first ![]() I even save all the temporary files for future references by compressing them with 7-zip or uharc (so all the identical parts can be compressed once for all so as for better compression ratio). |
*Urgent*
I can't find the mail box and trashcan to recolor , please someone help me find them in the maxis sub-categories. Thanks in advance |
Those are under Unknown in OW.
|
Or you could put SimPE in Advanced Mode (from Extras -> Preferences -> SimPE settings) and then use the "Open by Group ID" button in OW. A full list of the GroupIDs is included in the CEP documentation, but the ones that interest you are:
Trashcan: 0x7FD136BB Mailbox: 0x7FE4B434 |
Thank you so much HugeLunatic and Numenor, i have found the mailbox but i couldn't find the frigging trash can , i'll do as you said Numenor, thanks a lot!
EDIT:ok i recoloured the trashcan but there is an issue. There is a little part of it that remains chrome (where the cap is) is this how it's supposed to be or i'm missing something? Also although the texture i used isnt shiny , it still remains shiny. Can i change that somehow? I want it to be matte. Thanks in advance :-P EDIT2:Also i'm trying to recolor this boat by Mickyss http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=66062 and i can't , does this mean it's not color enabled? What can i do to recolor it? (i tried 4 times) |
corvidophile2,
For the trash can, At the txmt file, "property tab" -> select "stdMatEnvCubeMode" -> replace "reflection" with "none" to disable the env-cube reflection. for more infos, may read here As for the boat, have you chosen the "open" button to load the boat package for recolouring as in step 1 hint (after the pic but right before Step 2)? mickyss had already done pretty well with the limited knowledge at the time, and I can create the recolour package of the boat. I've checked his package, and realised 2 txtr files are basically useless and mis-references in txmt files, but thay should not be a reason for failure in recolouring. The base is bootsbrisket's dead nanny and buried casket. Yeah, I think mickyss was keen on bootsbrisket's stuffs ![]() Still schecking it in game |
Ah thanks so much niol! Yes i did , i tried checked game nothing , no recolor to be found. Maybe it's not recolorable i dont know, i have asked Mickyss at the boat thread and we shall see.
|
You're right, it's not recolourable.
May ask Mickyss to update it... ![]() Hopefully Mickyss won't fall down feeling bad for it... :D |

Niol i opened my recolor package for the mailbox and did as you said (or what i understood from it lol ) but it didnt work. I found this :stdMatEnvCubeMode:reflection
and i typed :none and committed and saved. However the mailbox didnt change. Did i do it right? Should i start over and not from my recolor package? Ok i noticed a little problem could this (see pic please) be caused by what i did with the trashcan.Hopefully i can fix this back by deleting the recolor *crosses fingers* and i hope i won't cause any problem to the lot. Aghh. |
Ok I know what happened the first time. I really should have tried it the second time before wasting your time
![]() Anyway the first time i tried it, the subset window didn't appear but i didn't actually notice this as the recolour still seemed to work and the build dxt worked etc until i saved and that's when it only saved the .bak file. So that was the problem ![]() ![]() |
