I'm having problems with this tutorial. I followed the directions, and I used the DXT thing to import my texture back into Simpe. It looked very blotchy with that so I tried again by importing the regular way with Simpe. It looked better that way, but when I went in game to view it, it looked blotchy. I've seen many paintings and wall cloths with very crisp, clear pics, but mine never come out clear and crisp. Here are the 2 pics of my wallcloth. The first one is how it looks in Photoshop. The second one is how it looks in-game. You can clearly see the difference. I don't understand why it isn't clear like it was in Photoshop. What am I doing wrong??

Try dxt 3. If that doesn't help, try 5.

Rainncandy 24th Aug 2007 7:14 AM

Ok, I'll try those.

in the catalogue..but not my recolor !

Hi !
thank you for that wonderful tutorial !
I made my first crib recolor !!! (very pwetty.....)

But, like many others, it seems that i have one itsy-bitsy problem...

Now, tell me right away, if the connecting swing set is recolorable or not...lol
I have tried recoloring it twice.

I followed the tutorial well, as I did for the crib.
BUT in the catalogue-again-i have now 2 custom contents-my recolors- marked with the little rounded star (CC),
but the texture is Maxis....on the thumb nails, and once placed on the lot.

i don't get it...i did the same as for the crib, and the crib works.

i did not import, because as said in the tutorial, the results are better when you build DTX, and so I build DTX, without resizing all sizes. like in the tutorial, I choose TEXt...1.

The texture i choose for the swing, comes from a wooden floor texture, and i simply copy it then paste into selection, on the maxis graphic, in my PSP9.
Then again, like I did for the crib...did I mentioned, the crib worked ? LOL

then I commit, but there was no save button, so I saved using the file tab...like for the crib...

and just before that, I could see my new texture displayed (when you right click to build DTX...)

what do you think ?

Thank you very much.

OH ! by the way...I have Night Life, and some carpets & rugs-all Maxis- but like that other member, they are still no where to be found, in wisard of simpe, or OW.....
I know i have downloaded some recolor of those, so it must be possible to recolor them......

Thank you,
Rosemary

Rosebine,

The case you stated sounds a clone rather than a recolour.
May ensure "recolour" ("recolor") is chosen in step 2 of this tutorial.

Rosebine 26th Aug 2007 2:06 PM

Thanks Niol, but yeah...the recolor option was already chosen, and I did not touch that....

after 3 or 4 tries...i decided to clone it to see...but since i didn''t know what to check in the cloning options, i just deleted everything !!!!

Guess I'll tell myself that the swing is not to be recolore.....lol

If you're recolouring the set from the base game, you'll need Numenor's CEP for recolouring, but if you meant the EP5 Seasons gift set, it's not recolourable until someone make a recolourable clone for it. :D

Rosebine 29th Aug 2007 12:29 AM

Well you know what ?...

OW didn't let me recolor it, (the base game swingset...) but wisard of simpe did !

I am so happy !...though it looks rather foolish...i put a wood texture on it, the wooden sets are so much prettier than the painted metal ones, except that it still look like it is made out of metal, cuz i didn't altar the mesh !! LOL

but still i got a tiny problem...the seat dosen't show....the simmies are sitting on nothing...though, we can see that "X" underneath, where the seat is supposed to be.

still gotta work a bit on it !

Thanks,
Rosemary :0)

Question

I'm in the process of recoloring a set and I wanted to know if I will be allowed to put pics of Sims with pay hair on the boxes? I'm recoloring boxes and I'm putting Sims on the boxes, so I need to know if I will be allowed to use pay hair on the Sims on the boxes. I want to be 100% sure before I start something that won't be accepted.

For example: If I wanted to recolor a diaper box, would I be allowed to show a toddler with pay hair or does it have to be free hair??

niol 29th Aug 2007 7:54 AM

Rosebine,

I had recolour the base game one before, but lost my recolour template. Yet, as much as I can remember is the several parts of the texture is remapped for different parts of the swing set itself. So, you may wanna check if you missed some graphics somewhere in the recolour texture.

Also, you may wanna recolour the another texture set of the 2 in the base game swing set.

Rosebine 30th Aug 2007 12:23 AM

Thanks....there is 2 texture with the swing set ?...when i saw, there was only one...how can i get them both ?...

Thanks.

Personnaly...I would love to see my work on a diaper bag that many will download !!!, and you could always give credit to the creator, in your description, and/or in the zip...i would put it in the description, but this is me...9but diaper babies don't have much hair normally...LOL)

niol 30th Aug 2007 6:51 AM

Rosemary (Rosebine),

There's a slight difference in step about the subset pop-up. In this case, just click OK without choosing any subset or clicking on any texture image.

Then, 2 sets of textures will result.

Course you can use pics with pay content!!! Why can't you?

FYI, EA said: However, I can assure you that, legally, Electronic Arts owns the rights to all material created from our engine [note: all custom content uses proprietary maxis code to an extent], and that the sharing of said material for free on community sites is completely legal, even if it is material that some players are attempting to sell.

See? No problem.

Rosebine 30th Aug 2007 8:51 PM

Thank you again Niol !!!
I'll do that then !

I was informed by a MTS2 moderator that I couldn't use pay hair on the boxes on this site. I guess b/c of the new rules.

Anyway, I'm still having problems with my work being sort of blurry when you zoom in ingame. I'm doing a bedding recolor, and when I zoom on it ingame, the decor on the bedding looks blurry, but when I compare it to other Maxis bedding, the Maxis bedding decor looks clear. I used the Build DDX thing on the 3rd setting with Sharpen box on "Smoothen" and it still comes out kind of blurry. I tried the Simpe way and it looks even worse. I don't see why my work comes out blurry but I've seen others that are not blurry at all. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Rosebine 31st Aug 2007 3:42 AM

Rainncandy, i read that the sharpen box had to be on "none"on a tutorial here...maybe "smoothen" was too much ?

have you tried using Wizards of simPE instead of object workshop?
for me anyways, the Wizards seems to work better....

my beddings looks okay...but i am just a tiny little beginner....you may not take my advices at all....LOL

Rainncandy 31st Aug 2007 4:03 AM

I tried it w/o the Sharpen box on "None" and it looked even worse. Smoothen makes it look better, but it's still blurry. When I zoom out far, it looks fine, but when it zoom in (not really close though) it looks blurry, but the Maxis bedding stays clear. I don't know what to do.

niol 31st Aug 2007 5:27 AM

Rainncandy,

Rosebine is right about using "none" for graphical accuracy on the newly imported texture.
But if "none" can't help in your case, may try to make a new recolour to see if it remains blurry with "none". Sometimes, a recolour package can get bad in shape.

and if it still doesn't help, may use zooming of a graphical programme on your import texture to see if it's the texture itself that looks blurry when magnified in the first place.

By the way, if all fail, may attach the package in the hope that someone may help check it.

Rainncandy 31st Aug 2007 5:45 AM

I've tried "none" and it NEVER worked well for me, whether I was doing bedding or paintings. They NEVER EVER turned out clear that way. They were always blurry.

And I always had to "UPDATE ALL SIZES" for it to look right, even though it wasn't that clear.

Rosebine 31st Aug 2007 5:53 AM

What paint program are you using, Rainncandy ?

Rosemary :0)

Rainncandy 31st Aug 2007 6:34 AM

I'm using Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Here is a pic of the bed and the canopy. The canopy and the bedding is blurry when you zoom it. You can definitely see the blurriness of the canopy in this pic:

I almost feel like giving up this project. It's very frustrating.

niol 1st Sep 2007 5:28 AM

Rainncandy,

may try to use your photoshop to magnify the texture to compare them in game in windowed mode.

if your textures look OK in the photoshop, then it's more likely the software issue. It can be due to dxt or TS2.
May try to use textures of higher resolution and/or sizes (double size).

Rainncandy 1st Sep 2007 11:58 AM

If I use a texture that is double the size, then do I need to reduce the size in Photoshop to fit correctly?

It would be an uvmapping problem: too "stretched".
