things I hate:
1) The books lack a storyline or plot AT ALL.
2) Stephenie Meyer has completely destroyed ANY respect I may have had for vampires, both fictional and "real" with her SPARKLY, MIND-READING, idiotically "beautifuL" vampys
3) The vampires SPARKLE. (See above)
4) There was a book that came about 10 years before this, the Night World series of books by L.J. Smith, one of the stories in it has almost EXACTLY the same plot line, yet she continues to claim that she "dreamed" about Bella and Edward and then started writing.
5) Bella wastes 3 months of her life (or more, I can't remember) going emo (no offenso to you guys, i feel horrible for you for having such an wawful character in your midsts) because Edward disappears.
6) She [Bella] is continually being saved by Edward. Not once does SHE save Edward ON HER OWN.
7) she also appears incapable of living without a man. She continually just HAS to be in love with someone. EXACTLY what feminism tries to stop - women from looking weak like Bella Swan.
8) Unneccesarily gory parts (do we REALLY need to know about the birth scene, Bella's spine breaking, her arms and legs bones breaking...?)
9) The character are all so "tragic" and sadsackish.
10) STFU about the "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob" thing. If it were me, everyone would be on Team Draco (Malfoy). He's AWESOME. And that's without him being some random unexplainable mythical creature.
11) Renesmee (i feel terrible for anyone who has this name, it would be really hard to spell, but that's not the point) has the GENETIC MAKEUP of a werewolf. yet guess what? SHE"S NOT A WEREWOLF.

This is why I hate Twitlight*.

Twilight is basically crappy fanfic disguised as Steph Meyer's sick fantasies, the moral of the series is basically to have a really, really hot boyfriend no matter what his flaws are.

Electric Bird 27th Mar 2010 4:45 PM

why i hate Twilight:
1. Edward sparkles. If I ever saw Dracula sparkle I might want to tear my eyes out.

2. Bella is an idiot.

3. Edward is a pedophile and stalker. If I found out Edward was watching me while I sleep, I'll place a shotgun under my bed so I can blow his damn 'vampire' brains out.

4. The fans. (ENOUGH ALREADY)

5. The whole Team Edward and Team Jacob B.S.

6.Stephanie Meyer cannot write. It's horrible. Her books make me want to cry.

7.Bella is sending an extremely bad message to young women in the world. 'My boyfriend left me. I'll just cry and act slightly catatonic for three months and want to kill myself. Woe is me!' Well guess what, I wish Bella killed herself or got hit by a truck and the damn series ended.

8. Waste of paper and time.

9. It ruined the vampire genre for me!

My older sister bought me the first book as a present and it's a coaster in my room. I guess it is useful. I just so happy my younger (7) is not into Twilight (she throws books at the TV when trailers or other promotional videos play. If only I can change her mind about the Jonas Brothers and Miley. . . )

Frankly, I don't care so much about the vampiric and werewolf lore so much as the notions Stephanie Myers had behind writing this.

It pretty much means teaches young children that having an unhealthy, borderline ABUSIVE relationship is desirable and good. If Edward was instead some creepy, pale, and nerdy guy who stared at her during lunch, I'm sure that she would not have received him so well. That, in itself, pretty much says that if the guy you're fancying is beautiful, then it's perfectly reasonable for him to stare at you, crawl by your bedroom window at night, throw you around and leave you like you're a piece of crap (pardon my language), and disallow you to make your own decisions. I dunno, that doesn't seem like a very good relationship. An example? Bella insists that she doesn't want to go to prom, but Edward says she's just being difficult. Why, doesn't that come to show that he's just the gentleman? And he forces her to go.

The thing that irks me most about the series is how it quietly persuades young readers that it's alright to have this kind of relationship, because having a boyfriend means you will be happy, lovely, and loved. Not having a boyfriend means you're going to be upset, irritable, and worthless. Perfectly lovely moral to be giving seventh graders, eh? I was a seventh grader when I read this, so I'm not exaggerating what my opinions were when I read this. I was honestly depressed when I realized I didn't have boyfriend. What did I do? I got one and became more depressed when the kid wasn't like Edward (a stalking, eaves-dropping, and creeper boyfriend). Sure, when you're in seventh grade, you aren't mature, but you shouldn't have to suffer the consequences of reading some horrible piece of trash that some call 'literature.' That's just a joke.

Prosthetics 8th Apr 2010 8:15 PM

I think the best idea presented by SMeyer is that when said abusive boyfriend leaves Bella, she goes into a fit and starts doing things to bring her an adrenaline rush (basic suicide attempts in any other context) just so that she can see Edward's face again. No really guys, what?!

whitewaterwood 9th Apr 2010 1:19 AM

I don't mind the sparkles. It's the message that the book is sending that bothers me. 'Your life is not complete without a man!' 'Be self-centered and care only about yourself. If you're sad, no one else matters!' And the 'sneaky' OMG ABORTION IS WRONG Stephanie Myer 'snuck' in the last book.

Like most vampire stories, the male vampires all have very little in the way of personality. Mary Sues, the lot of them.

Also, Vampire Knight is totally the anime equivalent of Twilight. Just thought I'd point that out.

The entire book isn't badly written, it's just some of the ideas she has in her book that I disagree with.

CircusWolf 4th Jun 2010 10:59 PM

ALL i have to say is that i hate it because VAMPIRES DONT SPARKLE THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN SPARKLE WITHOUT LOOKING GAY IS MICHEAL JACKSON period

Fournier 25th Jul 2010 7:35 PM

Everything about it.

StarlightBeauty 29th Jul 2010 4:21 PM

They make vampires look like sissies, and Bella is just.... UGH!!

Prosthetics 30th Jul 2010 12:00 AM

Idea: Present Twilight as a yaoi with Jacob and Edward fighting their feelings...for each other.

Get rid of Bella completely.

Jaylo 30th Jul 2010 4:36 AM

^lol

Better Idea: Introduce Van Helsing into the plot and replace Bella with Buffy the vampire slayer. Now we have an interesting story line!

Magic And Pancakes 14th Sep 2010 5:51 AM

The main reason I hate Twilight is that it reads like bad Mary Sue-ish fanfiction. Really bad Mary Sue-ish fanfiction. It's like Meyer has a secret vampire fetish and she writes these "books" to fulfill her own fantasies.

And the whole sparkling thing? Come on! What vampire with an ounce of self-respect would freaking sparkle? Poor Bela Lugosi must be spinning in his grave. He was one of the best vampires Hollywood has ever had and for anyone to even imagine Lugosi's Dracula sparkling is laughable. Vampires are evil...they don't fall in love with whiny teenagers and they don't sparkle. To be honest I really don't know a lot about vampires, but obviously I know more than Stephanie Meyer does.

And don't get me started on Edward/Robert. I don't want to insult anyone, but I think the guy looks a but effeminate. The surly/sullen expression on his face always pisses me off for some reason.

I'm sorry, but if you want to see a portrayal of vampires which shows them in their true light, watch Bela Lugosi in Dracula, Keifer Sutherland in The Lost Boys or even Gary Oldman as Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Hell, even Paul Ruebens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) was better as a vampire in the movie version of Buffy The Vampire Slayer!

Maybe it's because I am now in the older generation (I'm 29), but I just don't get it. I just think that Twilight is the most ridiculous thing ever and anyone who thinks that this is the greatest book/movie has absolutely no taste whatsoever.

Princess Leia 14th Sep 2010 7:29 AM

Unlike most of you, I don't really care that Meyer's vampires sparkle like pasty-faced clowns in sequin suits. It's her stupid masturbatory fantasy; she can do whatever she wants with it. It doesn't "ruin the vampire genre" because NOTHING is preventing you from enjoying the vampire novels that are well-written. Yeah, I'd go back in time and send a virus on her computer if I could, but it's easy enough to ignore a badly-written novel. Just, um, don't read it?

The problem is, it's not just a badly-written series. It's a series with a dangerous message and it's targeting a very impressionable demographic: tweens and teens (and moderately educated middle-aged women. Y'know, your run-of-the-mill Oprah sheeple).

Meyer tries to defend the anti-feminist criticisms by saying that feminism is about choice and Bella made her choices willingly. Okay, cool, but that's not the problem. The problem is that Bella and Edward's relationship is portrayed in a positive light when it's actually quite dysfunctional. "He's bossy and domineering because I'm weak! He's just protecting me from danger so I should trust him blindly! Our love is all-consuming and I am nothing without him!" Do we really want to have another generation of women to grow up believing that love is about finding a man who will protect you from the big bad world? I hate to sound all, "Oh, just think of the children!" but I don't know how else to put it. Twilight reinforces gender stereotypes and trite cliches about ~~~star-crossed lovers~~~.

It also preaches abstinence for no reason other than Meyer's belief that it's an admirable thing to do. Twilight portrays sex in an overly romanticized way. "We should wait because it's the right thing to do and when we do make love it's gonna be so amazing and romantic and perfect because I'm doing it with my one true love!1!!" I'm not suggesting that you should all go out and lose your virginities RIGHT THIS INSTANT but I think it's important to realize that sex in real life is far more complex than the sex portrayed in teen romance novels. Education is the key to success, yadda yadda yadda.

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking Twilight. Some people like the actors (they're not my type but hey, who hasn't watched a movie just to ogle at the pretty people) and others just think it's cheap entertainment. The problem begins when they start believing that Edward and Bella's "relationship" is the kind of love that everyone should aspire to have.

How about this?

Liekomgz 6th Oct 2010 9:54 PM

I hate Twilight because I feel people make such a big deal out of it and its too over-rated as it is. and the storyline/plot is stupid to me. besides, I'm not obsessed with vampires so I wouldn't absolutely read the book nor watch the movie.

Agreed with all of this, they're exactly the reasons why I can't stand Twilight. Just one little thing to point out:

Quote:
it's easy enough to ignore a badly-written novel. Just, um, don't read it?

This is something I read many, many times. If I don't actually read those books, how can I know if they're badly-written or not?
To make an example with my personal experience, I discovered Twilight in 2007 or so... everyone was talking really good about it, and I decided to give it a try, even if the story didn't inspire me that much. Read the first book, found out that not only it was completely un-original and un-inspiring, but it was also a bunch of repetitive, badly written anti-feminist words, full of medieval morals. So, I decided to give up on the series.
Still my point is: before critizicing something, it's better to know what it's about. It's true that, thanks to the internet, the reviews and the movies, you can end up knowing everything about the story without ever reading it (hell, even I am as informed as a Twilight fan about the end of the story, even without finishing the reading!), but I'm still on the "never rely on what others say about literature/music/movies and take a look at the thing yourself before criticizing!"

/end boring clarification

Exactly what I was going to say (especially the Draco Malfoy bit). Another thing is that the books are BORING! I mean, who wants to listen to Bella going on about how amazing Edwards is for half of the series. Also, nothing bad EVER happens to Bella. It's like 'oh dear. there are vampires trying to kill me. they wont because my darling amazing edward will save me.' Pathetic.

They also set a really bad example for teenagers: Getting married like just out of high school, having a baby just out of high school, attempting suicide because your boyfriend moved away....
I could go on. But I wont. That would take days.

FINALLY! I've been looking for a group like this in ages. I hate Twilight cuz it's pure bullshit. I never liked it and I never will.

majimak_chonsa 10th Dec 2010 11:55 AM

I saw the first movie with my friend (she offered to pay for my ticket...free movie) but it wasnt great, cringed throughout most of it. Especially when they were lying in the supposed meadow (more like forest to me). They body positions were just awkward to watch, with their limbs bent in odd ways. Like anyone would think they were in love...disfigured bodies

tut tut tut
lol

oh and all the useless stuff that the series has brought...Im seeing Team Jacob and Team Edward cosmetic packs in stores
