Faylen's Skinning Tutorial 2 - Selective Recolor, Adding a Simple Texture
27 Attachment(s)
Welcome to part two of my skinning tutorial series. If you are reading this, I am assuming that you have either gone through part one, or played around a bit enough to know how to open body shop, select an item to recolor, exported it to your image program, edited it in some way, and imported it to your game. All these steps are covered in the first tutorial. I am also assuming that you >have< an image editing program. I am using PhotoShop CS version 7.0, but you can use any other program that can create layers. Go to the Skinning FAQs thread, which is stickied in both this forum and the regular Skinning forum. Get your image program. Play with it, and learn what tools it has - most of what I show you here in Photoshop will be somewhere in your image program, maybe in a different place, but looking for it on your own will also teach you how to more effectively use the tools you have.
In this tutorial, we're going to do a few things that are more complex than just recoloring. I chose this outfit for a couple of reasons. First, the colors of the different parts of the outfit are very different from one another, making it easier to select the top only (or the bottom only!) Second, it is a very simple shape with few details to work around on the mesh. Third, it has a bump map (NormalMap.bmp, which you'll see when you open the project up.), which adds shadows and highlights that make the outfit look more three-dimensional. This means we don't have to get too worried about shadows and highlights in the texture layer. ![]() Now, as I said, you should already have learned how to export the outfit and then open the texture.bmp file in your image program, from the first tutorial or your own playing around, so I've skipped those steps. Here is our texture image. The first thing I want to do is get rid of those stripes. Not only do I not like them, but I want a solid color for the top. ![]() So. . .using your marquee tool, select the back stripe. You'll see why in a few steps. Make the rectangle a slight bit larger than the stripe. ![]() Now, see the eyedropper tool? We're going to click that, mouse our eyedropper over to the lighter orange and click. Why? Because it's a lot easier to pick a lighter color and make it darker than the other way around, IMO. Plus, I already know we're going to use a Filter tool that will darken this color a bit. ![]() I've skipped a picture here, because you really don't need it. This is easy. From your Edit menu (in the green box on top) you select "Fill", which brings up the box you see in the middle. When we used the eyedropper to pick up the light orange, that became our foreground color, so in that box, I want to use Foreground Color, Normal mode, and 100% opacity so that the rectangle gets filled completely with the orange. For other projects, you might change the settings for the fill in the box. It's not a really versatile tool, but it does come in handy a lot. ![]() In PhotoShop, the Filter menu can be a really, really good friend! In fact, because I play around with filters, I knew right off that the speckly texture on the rest of the shirt was just Noise. So, that's what we're opening up here. ![]() Look at that! Note, also, that you have a few variables in the Add Filter box. You might need to change the amount of Noise, the spread, etc. All the filters can be tweaked for different effects. Play with them. But for now, this is exactly what we want. ![]() Now, you could always do the same thing with the front stripe, but if you look where it is, you can see that it's smack dab in the middle of some highlighted texture. We're going to want to extend those highlights into our former stripe area without altering the original texture, so all we really need to do is leave the marquee around the stripe we filled on the back, and Copy, then Paste, from the Edit menu. The stripe will appear right on top of the original, so click on your move tool (the tool at the top right of the tools menu that looks like a triangle and four-way arrow) and move it over the front stripe. You'll see that you now have two layers, so you can alter the stripe all by itself. ![]() Using the Dodge tool, which lightens (and look at the top line - I've selected Highlights and lowered the exposure a bit so that the lightening will not be too drastic!) Next to "Brush" is a little drop-down arrow. It will bring up all your different brushes, and once you choose one, you can further alter its size with a slider in the drop-down box. I chose a brush that's a little faded around the edges, and selected a size that's a bit smaller than the original highlighted area on the base texture. ![]() After I've extended the highlights into the stripe and decided I like it, it's time to Flatten the image, which you will find in the Layer menu. This makes the whole thing a single image, so I can select the entire shirt - including the newly filled areas. ![]() There are a few ways to do this. In the original part two, I used the polygonal lasso to select the area I wanted to change. You can still do that - it's simple. Right click on the Lasso tool, which you can see right below the Marquee tool and to the left of the green boxed Magic Wand tool. You click on each point you want to be inside the shape you're recoloring until you have an entire multi-sided "box" enclosed. However, I wanted to show you another tool here. Since we have this bright orange in only one area, we can use the Magic Wand to select only that color. Now, up at the top, in the green rectangle, you have some options. The Tolerance is a number you can adjust by clicking to highlight and just typing in new numbers. The higher the tolerance, the more colors close to the one you select will be included in your selection. Anti-aliased refers to the quality of the image, not really applicable in this case, so just leave it checked. Contiguous means only the areas where the selected color range touches. In this case, it means that if we had orange shoes, too, they wouldn't be included in our selection. We have only one layer, so it doesn't matter whether we've checked Use All Layers. ![]() Now, from the Image Menu, we pick Adjustments, then Hue/Saturation, and check Colorize in the pop out box, just as we did in the first tutorial. Why? Because I don't want an orange shirt, that's why. ![]() And now for more fun with filters! You can see just from the list that you have all kinds of Filter toys to play with. We're going to use Texture>Texturizer. I highlighted the box for a couple of reasons. First, to show you that after you've chosen your filter, you can still play with more stuff. Second, to show you that I adjusted the Scaling. We're talking Sim clothes here, and if you don't scale the filter down, the texture is going to look like bad Barbie clothes. Also, this is why we had to add Noise to the stripe to make it match the rest of the shirt - the filter applies to everything selected in the same way. Without noise, our solid fill stripes would look glaringly different from the rest of the shirt. ![]() Here you can see what we're starting to get at. (You know, of course, from the first tutorial, that we used "Save As" and overwrote the original texture, then refreshed in Body Shop, because you read the first tutorial.) You can also see that even though our filter lessened the shadows and highlights of the texture, they're still pretty visible, thanks to the bump map. ![]() The bad thing is that it's a little hard to see the edges, and for the next few steps, we want to know where they are. So, we open up our alpha file, Select All (from the Select menu at the top) copy it, and paste it over the texture. ![]() Oh, no, now we can't see our texture! Never fear, look at the green box on the right. Pasting made a new layer, as you can see from the thumbnail, and all we have to do is click on the Opacity, and slide the slider until we can see through the image of the alpha file. ![]() This part is going to make all of you who like to make t-shirts very happy. We're going to take an image from somewhere else and. . .paste it onto the front of the shirt. I found this butterfly, which is a really good image because the background is a solid color, making it easy to copy only the image I want. ![]() Using the Magic Wand tool again, unclicking "Contiguous" so I can get the black inside the wings, too, I click anywhere on the black. ![]() I want to be able to copy only the butterfly part, making the shirt show through the black inside the wings so that it looks kind of like a lace applique. You very well might not care to do this, but since it's something that can come in handy many other times, I'm going to show you. From the Layer menu, I select Add Layer Mask, then Hide Selection. This basically eliminates the black part from the image. ![]() I flattened the butterfly image, used the Magic Wand again to pluck up my butterfly, then Copied. I pasted onto the shirt, used the move tool again (because your image will pop up right in the middle) and used the outlines of the alpha image layer as a frame of reference for placing the butterfly. ![]() After a Save As in PhotoShop and a Refresh in Body Shop, it was obvious that this butterfly was way too big, and stretched funny across my sim lady's chest. So, from the Edit menu, we select Transform>Distort. ![]() This gives us a box with several adjustable points - click and drag. I think the shape looks a bit better, narrowed across the bottom where the image is going to get stretched. Of course, we have to move it again. ![]() After a Save As/Refresh, I decided that the image was just a bit too big, still, but the shape was working. So, back to the Edit menu - this time when we select Transform, we're going to choose Scale instead of distort. This changes the vertical and horizontal of the image, and you can either drag to enlarge or shrink, or manually change the percentages, as you can see in the green box. This is handy if you want to keep the image the same proportions, just bigger or smaller. ![]() Notice the difference between the bottom width of the image in your texture file, and here on the sim? Just as with real fabric, if it gets stretched across a wider part of the body, it's going to get distorted. ![]() And this is just the result of playing around with Filters and Colors. You can do whatever you want to the butterfly - it's a separate layer, so it won't affect the base texture of the shirt, and you can always go backwards if you don't like how it changed. (The color of the shirt changed because once the butterfly was the right size and shape and in the right position, I made the opacity of the alpha image layer Zero. But I didn't discard it, because we're not done. The bare neckline and cuffs bother me. . .) ![]() Moving the opacity up again, I can see where I actually have a neckline and cuffs. I used the eyedropper tool again, picked up the purple from the butterfly, and began brushing from the edge of the neckline inward until it was thick enough to show on the Sim in Body Shop. Now, I was going to go back and retake this image because there's a mistake on it, but I decided to leave it to point out something that happens to me all the time when I'm creating and not paying attention. Notice which layer is highlighted. Not the texture, which is what I wanted to be drawing on, but the alpha image, which I had just changed the opacity on. That means that my color was being applied to the wrong layer! Another thing you'll find sometimes is that if you use any of the selection tools, like lasso or marquee, and then try to paint, nothing will happen, because you have to click with the selection tool a second time to get rid of the selection. ![]() So here we have our finished product, recolored, retextured, with an image pasted on, and colored with the brush tool. You learned a lot, didn't you? Now go play! ![]() |
This is a GREAT tutorial! I've always found texturing hard, even though my knowledge of the programmes I use is fine... this tutorial has made it loads easier for me. Thanks *Happiness!* =D
|
Thanks to your tutorials, I just made my first set of recolors. Thank you :D
|
i am using paint.net and i can find where it says fill...=S
|
There is a set of paint.net tutorials (btw, paint.net doesn't scale things that well, you might need to use sharpen after scaling)
here: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=156916 and also there is one here, to help you learn how to use paint.net: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=147840 It's not about clothing, but it will still help you become more familiar with paint.net Paint.net does not share all abilities as photoshop does, but you certain should find a fill button. Look for tutorials on the web and just play around with the program. |
OMG this is such an amazing tutorial i never new you could put pictures on the clothes
|
Great tutorial; thank you so much!
|
Thank You
I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you for a great tutorial. I just made an outfit which I still can't believe that I actually made!
![]() Very good and easy to follow. Thank You! ![]() Miri |
First things first, thank you so much for this tutorials. I've followed them step by step and they're very easy to understand.
That said, I have a problem. During the actual creation process, up until I check how does the thing looks on the sim, the recolor and added texture look great. But when I finish, and add it to the game, it looks horribly pixelated. I've tried changing the size of the file first (From 591 I believe to 1024 pixels as you say, then from 72dpi to 300dpi, before I start doing any graphic work), and nothing I do seems to work. I'm using photoshop 7.0, so I would appreciate any advice, because I'm fearing I'll have to stay doing simple recolorings and nothingm more complicated. |
Luxshine, you have to fix the settings on your system for bodyshop and then make new projects (and have it export at 1024x1024) and then remake your graphics
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=96889 |
Oh, thanks! I did that and it worked. Yay! Now I can go on and do the more complex things. thanks again for all your help.
|
Love your tutorials!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for writing these tutorials! I have finished a whole line of recolors, and i'm working on learning how to put the butterfly on the sweater. I'm having a small problem though. I have adobe photo shop cs2. When you take the picture, hide layer mask to eliminate the black part. I can do that but when i try to copy and paste the butterfly i either get the whole picture, or i get the outline and the butterfly is gone. I'm really confused, i can't see a step that i've missed, i've been trying to figure this problem out for two days now, but i've come up with nothing. if you have any suggestions as to what i could do i would really appreciate the help!
thank you again so much! |
I am not sure why Faylen chose to use 'mask', I guess in order to not actually change the graphic, but I've always been puzzled by the white 'halo' around her butterfly. Personally, I make a copy of whatever graphic I'm working with, and I simply use the magic wand (with antialias and in this case not contiguous) and I hit delete and just delete the background. If it didn't get the right amount of the background (like there's a dark halo) I undo and adjust the tolerance value, and select again.
Or I try to select what I want to keep instead of the background, then I inverse the selection, and hit delete. For funky designs on t-shirts that aren't so lacy, I sometimes delete most of the background with a select and delete and go around by hand edited away stray edges and also touching things up. I have photoshop 7, and haven't tried her exact directions in this tutorial, but maybe one of these options will give you an alternative way to approach the problem. The other thing to do is to simply look for tutorials on the web that use CS and teach about using masks - because the more you learn about how to use your graphics editor, the more you'll be able to do ![]() |
Excellent! Thanks a lot! You were SO creative in doing this!!!!
|
Thanks - this is very helpful. I am good in Photoshop, so now i can make clothes!! Yippi!
![]() |
Thank you so much for this tutorial it helped me a lot, even though I use PSP. I had some troublw though on the first steps while trying to change the colour from orange to pink and then adding the highlights...this was a bit tricky for a PSP user. But I managed to make somewhat of a new shirt with a butterfly so thank you again. I will try to find tutorials also with PSP.
|
you should show me how to do it on regular desktop paint, i dont have any of your fancy photoshop or gimp, so i dont have the filter thing, do i cant do this
|
Eradhadh, you cannot do what you need to do with paint. There's no way to do it. You must find yourself a graphics editor that supports layers. GIMP is free (you must really read if you want to learn) so you will need to figure out if it can run on your computer, then look at the GIMP tutorials. Or paint.net, and look at the tutorials for that.
Btw, this topic is also covered on the forums and in the FAQ (frequentlly asked questions) which is in the stickies top of the page. |
Help please I got up to the part about the butterfly and i'm confused and tried it but it came out all wrong. it was a pic with greek letters it took away the black but most of the green as well and left me with a white back ground . I can place the picture just doesnt look right because it doesnt blend with the shirt. what am i doing wrong also i am using photoshop as well.
|
Great tutorial! I tried it, it took me a while because I have a different version of photoshop, but it turned out great! Instead of a butterfly I used a heart!
|
can i download the file?i can't see the pic online...
|
iamssisy, pictures are downloading slowly but they are loading. Once it is loaded you could ask your browser to save the html. I don't believe there is a downloadable version of this tutorial.
|
Thank you soooo much for both tutorials on skinning. They were very helpful for a first timer like myself. Now I have another use for Photoshop CS2. :D
|
I just thought i'd leave a little comment to say thanks.
I don't actually have PhotoShop, but I do have PaintShop Pro. I'm finding it very hard to recolour clothing right now, I don't seem to know where the right buttons are and how to use them. Luckily, i'm downloading a trial version of PhotoShop CS2, if your tutorials have helped enough and I understand how to use the program, I may buy it. Sorry for the long story, just thought i'd explain my possition. Thanks again, Amy |
*Looks chuffed*
Oh, yay! I managed my first proper recolour thanks to you! :P |
Thanks!

really good tutorial thank you
Ive recoloured with a purple color, added two textures: 1. A butterfly. 2. A Sims 2 logo. |
hi
i have a problem when i use my marque tool it says the bla bla bla is not higher then 50 % what does that mean and how can i change it |
Fantastic tutorial!
Thank you so much!! I just did my first retexture. I can't wait to try the third part of your series. You make it so easy to understand. Of course, it probably helps that I'm using the same program, otherwise I might be totally lost.
|
Thank you so much for this great tut!
i'm totally new into the sims at all and a few days ago i didn't even know that there's sth like body shop ![]() |
wow, this is awesome! Thanks so much!! :D
|
thank you so much! this is a really great tutorial!
|
I just started this tutorial for the second time. The first time I didn't have photoshop, and now I do, so it was easier this time around. However, some things I noticed, (a few steps missing maybe?), was that when you mention this:
Quote:
You do not necessarily say to copy & paste this image into a new window. Once I did that, I noticed that I had the white background later that I needed. Another thing I noticed, and seem to be a bit confused about is when you mentioned this:
Quote:
My butterfly doesn't change colors when I change the opacity of the alpha image layer to zero. It stays the same, therefore, I can't grab the purple in the butterfly, because it's the same color as before. Is there something missing here as well? Do I have to merge layers, or something? Anybody who can help, I'd really appreciate it! Great tutorial, by the way! I think I'm sort of getting the hang of things! |
amberandcarlos33 - I think Faylen was commenting on something she did (that's not 100% clear to me) that changed the base color of the shirt layer
To change your butterfly, just work with the butterfly's layer - not with the mask, but on the actual butterfly - you should be able to apply layer effects (like a color overlay, for instance - which has options for the color, percentage, and effect - like transparency, multiply, darken...) and you can also change the opacity and layer settings - multiply or darken, for instance, would have gotten rid of the pale 'halo' around the butterfly's edges. |
I have a question. When I have finished this tutorial, and have a new colored shirt with an image (butterfly, etc.) on it that I REALLY like...how do I go about changing the color on the NEW shirt, to make more colors of that shirt?
For example, I put an Alien on a green colored shirt, I like it, but because there is a whitish halo around the Alien, I would like to make a white shirt to put it on. What is the best/easiest route to go to achieve this? Also, Is there perhaps some other way of actually 'getting rid of' that halo that shows up in the first place? Help Please!! |
didadragonfly,
make a recolor of another maxis shirt that's similar in color to what you want. You can change the color further using the techniques from tutorial #1. You can take your alien and paste it into your new project then. What else. If you go in and hand-edit your alien graphic, you can zoom in and erase or recolor the pixels around the edges that don't match. There are also different ways to make selections, etc, that can help you deal with that issue - it's a basic program/editing issue more than a sims one. I think Faylen used masks in this tutorial, I often simply delete stuff from around the edges of my new graphic. I also (if my original graphic comes in larger than my final) delete the stuff and clean up the edges *before* scaling things down. That helps hide any minor flaws. |
I am using adobe photoshop elements 2 which is fairly similar to your program. My problem is when I try to move the image I chose I cant because I get a window that says the layer is locked??
|
i'm using GIMP and there isn't an "add noise" button. There are other weird options. I don't know what to do :S
|
This Is a great tutorial but I'm using Paint.Net and when I click the eyedropper it say its a color picker then when I click on the lighter top color it doesn't do anything?Help!
|
Kelsi and Sims2Roxs - both GIMP and Paint.net have separate tutorial sets on this site. They don't necessarily cover the same thing, but some of them are similar, and they are enough to get you started. Beyond that, you will need to go look for either Gimp or Paint.Net tutorials on the web to learn more about other effects, working with layers, and so on which could then help you achieve this effect in your programs.
|
This tutorial rocks!! I'm trying to make a jacket a jean denim jacket so hopefully this will help.
|
Great tutorial! Thanks a bunch!
|
I know how to do regular jeans (just from texture) Like this:
![]() Picture by me. Mesh by Nouk But how to do the pockets and sutff that I marked in the picture ? Is there any Brushes , Patterns or I have to draw them myself :o ![]() Picture from : www.starsims.net If you have any toturials or something please post them here ! And also if someone know's how to do these ? ![]() Picture from : www.curioussims.com Thank you ! |
people often use photos or photo elements to make some of the details.
You can also look carefully at the maxis outfits to examine the shading and so on. I've use a mixture of drop shadows, outer glow (set to dark), bevel... and such. |
Weeeeeeeeeeee. I love you.
I followed your steps and used other textures too. I think I found a new hobby. |
This...is...GREAT! At first the tutorial was a little complex for me put I finally got it. Thanks again for another good tutorial.
|
Thanks a lot, that was great! I feel a lot more comortable with the process now!
|
Thanks! You've made it so easy to make new wonderful oppertunites for me! This is great!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Thanks so much this helped me out alot to put in my recolors of regency clothes since there isn't that many. Now i have a few that i have done and recolored all by myself
![]() |
I followed your steps. It was amazing job you have done, but one problem is... I did click "SAVE AS or SAVE" Then I went to Bodyshop and I clicked REFRESH. It show nothing. I have Adobe Photoshop CS2.
|
wolfgal, well you must make sure that you're overwriting the files in the projects folder. If it adds 'copy' to the name, bodyshop won't see it. So look at the name carefully.
|
okay...
very good tutorial I must say. However, you lost me at the image part. For one thing you never said how to get the image actually on photoshop. I tried google, than moving the image to my desktop and then to photoshop, but then it wouldn't let me add a layer mask, and when I tried adding a new layer, it made the image black and white!!! Please help, I'm totally lost!
|
Thanks!! I can now all with clothes
![]() Mega thanks! :P |
What an awesome tutorial! Thanks so much!
|
great tutorial.thanks.uhm do you know how i could use the ones that i have downloaded from this site?the ones that are ready made?.
|
Nice! I made a new shirt, its kinda like a t-shirt but its got an adultswim logo on it! Hehehe!
|
Im so happy
I'm so happy halfway through part 2 with my results that I saved to show it off to friends before adding the butterfly. Besides, I'm having probs with the copying and pasting of the alpha file. I am using Corel PSP photo x2 pro. Settings are a little different. I have the option to paste as a transparency layer but not exactly sure of what I am aiming for so don't know if it worked. I left it at that and will try to go back later. Unless someone else knows how to continue from that point....
DEVAH502 :D |
thanks so much!

Thank you + Sidenote
Hey!
First of all, I would like to thank you a lot for these tutorials! I have been wanting to create clothing for a long time. But I have been hesitating, because I thought it would be dificult. But you made it seem so simple, I just had to try it! And it is simple! Now, I have been using Photoshop for quite a few years now, and I noticed that, if you want to see the 'edges' of the clothing, the ones the Alpha layer display, you ajust the layer's opacity. Perhaps it's just me, but I think it would be easier to change the layers blend mode to 'multiply'. This way, all that is white in the alpha layer will become 'transparent', while all that is black will stay black. Allowing you a much more clear view of the 'edges' and a much better view of the colors underneath. Your method: ![]() My method: ![]() I hope you understand what I am saying, since English isn't my native language... I also hope that you find this usefull... I am not trying to be some kind of know it all person. I just want to help, this is just something I found out... |
A small question. . . .
This tutorial is great, but I have Paint.net. I could get into the tutorial a bit, but I just need to know: Does Paint.net have a Dodge tool or a tool like it? If not, how can I create highlights on the shirt?
|
Wow- I love your tutorials! Even though I'm a complete beginner and you could call me green, I actually understand what to do now whereas when I tried myself... well, you get the picture. Thanks!
|
I have a question, when i recolor clothes, if i want to go back after closing gimp, and work ont hem again, the layer i add ontop to recolor is gone, and i cant see the outline of my dress at all, let alone texture it, why cant i see the outline?
|
I add my bunny on the shirt

Thanks Sooo much for this wonderful tut ! I have learned so much x

Still just as informative without, but since these are linked in the tutorials section, is there any way to update this so that it includes photos again?

This may be a long shot but, by the way the tut. are great, I can only see the screen shots at the bottom of the screen. Up in the tut. I only see the white box with the red x in it. I am using Microsoft digital image so the names of the tools are different . I used the clone brush to remove the strip so I didn't have to play around with noise and hue, so I skipped that part of the tut. So scrolling up and down to see the pics is making me confused......... Anyway I changed the outfit saved it but when I try to refresh nothing happens. I tried saving as png, bmp, I tried doing a save as, save copy as, and just save I don't know why. I followed the first tut and I did it, I even did a couple of others......... OK I guess something was wrong with something because I got frustrated, turned everything off rebooted and when I started BS and opened my package the new color was there, go figure............. by the way how big is 150 kb in pixels or inched, I was trying to up load the end product and it said that my file was 415 kb can I resize it with my digital image............. Thank for the tut. and thanks to R.S. for all your help.

Help...little red "X"'s everywhere
Hi all,
I'm trying to folow this series of tutorials but can't seem to get them to show up properly. The text downloads fine but where the little pics should be i just have a red x, even when i right click and try to 'show picture' they still don't work. It's really frustrating b/c alot of the instructions for this tutorial are in those little pics. They all show up together at the bottom of the page as screen shots, but i can't read the writing. ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH! Please help or maybe suggest another set of tutorials i can follow? Thanks, lin |
If you have questions about this tutorial (or recoloring in general), you need to start a new thread in the BodyShop Recolouring Forum, not post here. Go to the Create menu, select BodyShop, click Recolouring, then click the New Thread button. Moderators and creators check that forum and answer questions there.

I have Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8. Its really hard to find the right tools, sometimes it takes up to 15 minutes for me to find the right one. It's even harder, cuz I can't see the pics while I read the tutorial. When I tried to get rid of the stripe and put the noise in it looks... weird? Not right? I don't know the word. When I add noise its a whole bunch of random bright colors, like when a tv is messing up lol.

I love the tutorials, but as others have mentioned, the pictures are dead. They're all bundled at the bottom, so all is not lost, but it's very easy to get lost scrolling up and down to see what your instructions are talking about!

Once again another great tutorial - this was very helpful too.
Thanks :D |
Do you have any tricks on how to get the "Dodge" effect to look right. On my pictures they always look a little neon :o

Thank you so much for these tutorials. I had gone through one somewhere else right after the game came out and learned some basics but have not used it because new stuff was coming out all the time. Now that it's a has been by EA I figured I needed to learn so I can have things I need in the game (that I can't find on here). The second clothing tutorial has some links to the pictures that don't seem to be working though. I think I can figure things out from the write ups but it makes it harder because I am a very visual learner.

Ok so because I was bored today and I was going through the tutorial again because I was having some trouble, I decided to convert it to a word document. Credit is 100% Faylen's, I'm just trying to help a little. If you want it in a pdf, I can do that too.

This was very useful :D

Another great tutorial that has got me thinking of my own things to do. Thank you for the easy to follow tutorial and this will do me for now until I am comfortable with this one.

It looks like most of this stuff is impossible to do with Jasc Paint Shop Pro. I can't find a "Fill" under the edit or anywhere except the can on the toolbar for "Flood fill". I don't see a "Dodge" anywhere and don't know what to do to take the place of it which makes me very frustrated. Normally, I don't give up on ANYTHING I try to do, but this is so difficult that I believe this is one project I will actually quit with trying to learn. I can't afford Photoshop with all those options lacking with Paint Shop Pro.

Don't give up, Strawberrygrl78.
The paint bucket will work the same way as "Fill"; they both do the same thing, but one is in the menu and the other is in the toolbar (in Photoshop, anyway... maybe in PSP it's just in the toolbar). Dodge and burn in PSP can be found here. The GIMP is a piece of free software that does many of the same things that Photoshop does. Another option is Photoshop Elements, which is about $100 (a lot less than Photoshop!), but it still has all the main functions that you'd need for recolouring Sim clothing. That's what I use. |

I eventually got the paint can to work, but I had to keep clicking in the area to try to fill it in to cover the gray and white and for some reason it left an area gray under the arm on the sweater in Body Shop. Thanks for the link as well. I came across that myself when trying to figure out how to dodge with PSP, but I think that is Corel and my copy says Jasc on it. I am not sure if they are different, but my copy of PSP is version 6, so it is pretty old. I think it is too old to have the burn and dodge options yet. I even tried to use the "Flood fill" in lighter colors to get it to work and it looked awful. I am downloading a trial of Photoshop just now, but I can't afford to keep it after the trial. I will definitely look into the other ones you reference since I have really wanted to be able to make things for myself and to share with others for years. Thanks again for your help! ![]() I managed to get GIMP to work but now I can not get prints on the shirt for the life of me! There is no hide selection on the layer mask, and when I flatten, use the wand and copy and paste, it only leaves the outline of my butterfly and leaves the box around it as well. When I go to the Body Shop, if it is on my alpha, it turns the whole outfit white. When I have it on the color, it just leaves it that color. Only once I was able to get the outline of the butterfly with the lines of the box from the picture. It is as if the butterfly was cut out in which this is the color of the shirt, and there is white around the cut out. I have been trying to work with this for hours so that I could just move on! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!! |
how do i bring up the file to paste an image onto the jumper any info i would be greatful for
|
a tutorial without the pictures is pointless please update or replace it.

The pictures all seem to be available in the first post.

I agree. If it were possible to change the first post, it seems that it wouldn't take too much to fix the inline URLs.
Just change: "https://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/images9/MTS2_348781_Faylen_page01.jpg" to "https://thumbs2.modthesims.info/img/2/8/9/2/7/MTS_Faylen-348781-page01.jpg" |
