This beautiful Tudor-styled cottage has a sad tale to tell about love, betrayal and loss.

Lady Barbara was the young and lovely wife of Lord Geoffrey Riverton, a noble and rich man but almost twice her age. She was riding past Gamekeeper's Cottage on a sunny afternoon when she first saw Albert Simms, the new gamekeeper, cutting wood at the garden. How handsome he appeared to be and so full of life, while her husband was just old and wrinkly! She couldn't help herself, she had to stop and make acquaintance - no matter how inappropriate it was.

It only took one look into the gamekeeper's deep blue eyes for Lady Barbara to fall in love. And how could a common gamekeeper resist a fine noblewoman like her? The feeling was mutual, and soon enough Albert Simms and Lady Barbara became lovers. Gamekeeper's Cottage seemed like a perfect hideout, a haven full of love and hopes for the future.

What Lady Barbara didn't know was that the jealous Lord Riverton had started to suspect something was going on behind his back. He sent spies to follow her and then one day he came and cought Lady Barbara and the gamekeeper by suprise. He cursed Lady Barbara and called her the worst names. It was then that Albert Simms grabbed one of his hunting rifles and shot Lord Riverton dead to defend her honour and their love.

The gamekeeper ended up at the gallows, and poor Lady Barbara was left with no husband or lover - and most of all, without any honour or reputation. Gamekeeper's Cottage was the only thing Lord Riverton left her at his will. She was forced to spend her life at the scene of the tragedy, with only a half-witted maid to keep her company. She became a recluse, tormented by her memories and loneliness. She finally died penniless, sick and miserable but the story of her forbidden love lives on.
