WaterShed was the University of Maryland’s entry into the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011. It is a solar-powered home that comprises systems which interact with each other and the environment. It is able to collect, recycle, and reuse water through a number of systems. It was inspired by the rich, complex ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The home is equal parts modern and traditional using both current best building practices and cutting-edge technological solutions to create a high efficiency home. In addition to its water collection and recycling system and extensive gardens the house features a stocked pond, green roofs, solar water heating and many other environmentally conscious features.
