Christine Chapel touched her uniform to one of the planetoid hangers in her closet. She watched absentmindedly as its rose colored, velvet tendrils curved gently around the shoulders of the garment. There was a quiet rustle as the hanger drew back into the closet with its prize. They were pretty things, very considerate of the clothes you gave them to look after. There was never a wrinkle to be found in anything they had handled. She might have marveled in their efficiency as she was won't to do on quiet days like this one, but there were other thoughts occupying her mind.

She turned away as the closet, exuding the pleasing smell of rosemary and lavender as it closed. There had been no medical emergency, unless a bruised elbow counted. The ship was calm as a warm summer evening, only there is neither evening or summer aboard a spaceship. There is only unending blackness outside. Everything else is painfully distant, galaxies, stars, worlds.

There is the crew, normalizing this strange place with its presence, and yet there is an unshakeable loneliness beneath it all. She sometimes saw it on people's faces when they retired to their quarters. She saw it in the way they clung to shared spaces, staying on in the dining area until no one was left.

Not everyone was the same. Some held their feelings in.

People think Spock unfeeling. Even Dr. McCoy, wonderful doctor that he is, treats Spock as if he were barely more than a machine. Why are they so blind? There is so much emotion locked up behind Spock's inscrutable expression. Those eyes of his. If she could only reach behind them. If she could touch his heart like had touched hers...

Under the gradually fading blue glow of the night simulation lamp, Christine Chapel climbed into bed. Soon the small neatly furnished room would be engulfed in shadows. She closed her eyes, sampling the darkness. Like the Enterprise, her thoughts moved across the blackness. She pulled up the silvery blanket trying not to mind the cold.
