Neo-Roman/Byzantine Administration (Adult Career)
While the Sims who succeed in becoming National Leader are to be congratulated for their achievement, everyone in SimNation knows that the true power lies not in the hands of the "public government", but in the stupidly complex bureaucratic system that governs the SimNation from the obscure and quite lovely Palace of the Senate in SimCity.
With a political system based on the eastern remnant of a famous empire which once existed in the Old Country, none can deny that SimNation is currently in strange times, and there are even rumours about the consolidation of power in the high echelons of the bureaucracy... |
Basing myself on my Neo-Byzantine Administration career for The Sims 2, I decided to create a version of it for TS4. As the above introduction states, the career is based on the idea that the Politics career from City Living is essentially a powerless sham, created to appease the masses, while the true work of government takes place in SimCity's Palace.
The career has a main branch with seventeen levels which focuses on the legislative government, followed by two branches, the Senate (in which your Sim becomes a member of the senatorial aristocracy of SimNation) and the Palatine Aristocracy (a sort of constitutional shadow government based on the inner court of the Byzantine Empire).
Here are the ranks for the main branch:
1. Horeiarios - (Mon; Tue; Sat; Sun) - 16§/h - 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM You have been put in charge of managing the food distribution across local grocery shops. Not exactly the most prestigious job, but a good place to start practising your management skills. 2. Silentarios (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 20§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 1; Logic 1 Removed from your former position by the Papias, you have been assigned to the school of the Silentarii. Given a gold staff as your badge of office, you are now part of a small group charged with keeping order and silence in the Palace of SimCity, be it in the hallways or during audiences. 3. Vestetor (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 26§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 1; Logic 1 Your superior, the Master of Ceremonies, has decided that you would be of greater service to the nation as one of the vestetores. With the fiblatorion (a cloak fastened by a fibula brooch) as your insignia, you are a minor officer of the Vestiarion, better known as the Public Wardrobe, and perform any task given to you, be it menial or noble. 4. Mandator (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 30§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 2; Logic 2 Your performance was noted, and you were rewarded by advancing into the class of the mandatores. Wielding a red wand as your badge of office, you are assigned with assisting senior officers with their tasks, although most of the time it is you who does the whole work, with your superiors invested in doing absolutely nothing. 5. Logariastes (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 39§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 3; Logic 2 The Kephale of your town has noticed your work, and has decided to elevate you to the office of Logariastes. As such, you are in charge of controlling the expenses made by the local administration. 6. Kephale (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 45§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 3; Logic 3; Writing 2 Due to intrigues hidden to you, your former superior was removed from office, and you were elevated in their stead to the position of Kephale. You are now the governor of your town, yet independent from the local mayor, and directly above you is the provincial governor. From now on, it would be a good idea for you to enhance your charisma skill, as it will certainly help further your ascension. 7. Orphanotrophos (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 52§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 3; Logic 3; Writing 3 Removed from your position as Kephale, you have been instead given the office of Orphanotrophos. As the director of the most important state orphanage of SimNation, you not only are are responsible for your wards and steward of their fortune until the age of twenty, but also have a great number of subordinate officials to carry out the day-to-day administration of the orphanage. 8. Guardian of the Laws (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 56§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 4; Writing 4; Logic 3 The senate has appointed you as "nomophylax" - guardian of the laws. Holding great authority and renown, you preside over the state sanctioned law school of SimCity. 9. Papias (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 62§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 5; Writing 4; Logic 4 In recognition of your service, you have been assigned as the new Papias. Commanding an extensive staff, without which you would be utterly unable to perform your duties, you are responsible for the security and maintenance of the buildings of the palace complex of SimCity. 10. Archon of the Mint (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 66§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 6; Writing 5; Logic 4 With your tenure as Papias over, you have been assigned as the new Archon of the Mint. You have as your main responsibility the minting of currency for all of SimNation. A rather prestigious and important position, but not exactly the highest available in this field of work. 11. Chartulary of the Wardrobe (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 69§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 7; Writing 6; Logic 5 The General Logothete has seen fit to appoint you as Chartulary of the Wardrobe, turning you into the chief magistrate of one of the major fiscal departments of SimNation - the Public Wardrobe. Below you exists an extensive bureaucracy which you must dominate if you wish to not only remain on this office, but also rise above it. 12. First Secretary (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 73§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 8; Writing 6; Logic 6 Appointed as the head of the chancery of SimNation, you command the class of secretaries which you were once part of. Much like the Chartulary of the Wardrobe, you have an extensive team under your command, and above you are only the Logothetes. 13. General Logothete (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 76§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 8; Writing 7; Logic 7 Appointed by the Great Intermediary as the leader of the Ministry of Finance, you now hold one of the highest positions available in the administration of SimNation. Keep up your good work, and make sure that your fellow Logothetes don’t try to do anything that may cause your premature unemployment. 14. Logothete of the Drome (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 80§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 9; Writing 8; Logic 7 As the Logothete of the Drome, you are now the head of the department of Public Post, one of the most important ministries in all of SimNation. Perhaps with enough hard work and a high level of competence, you may be given headship over a much more prestigious ministry. 15. Logothete of the Military (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 84§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 9; Writing 9; Logic 8 Being the Logothete of the Military, you are charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security, as well as all branches of the military. 16. Grand Logothete (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 87§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 10; Writing 9; Logic 9 Having risen to the optimal position of Grand Logothete, you have assumed the conduct of foreign affairs, while also heading the department involved with diplomatic correspondence. 17. Great Intermediary (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 93§/h - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Objectives -> Charisma 10; Writing 10; Logic 10 You have become the Great Intermediary, holding the highest position avaliable outside the senatorial and palatine branches of government. As your title suggests, you are an intermediary between your ministers and either the Senate or the Palatial Aristocracy, depending on who's adressing who. Sometimes you even serve as a mediator between these two branches, as conflicts between the two are frequent. You are in the optimal position to expand your network of "friends" to the two branches above you, so make haste before they decide you've outlived your usefulness. |
Here are the ranks for the Senatorial Aristocracy branch:
1. Endoxotatos - (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 178§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 2 Mischief As a member of the Senate, you are Endoxotatos - most glorious. Being part of this class gives you access to a number of offices which are constantly changing hands. Seek further recognition, and you might find yourself in a more stable position. 2. Megaloprepestatos (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 240§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 3 Mischief From one senatorial class to another, you have become Megaloprepestatos - most magnificent. You are now at the highest rank available in the senatorial aristocracy of SimNation, and all senatorial offices are open to you. Now, you just have to reach them. 3. Hypatos/Hypatissa (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 300§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 4 Mischief You were awarded with the honorific title of "{M0.Hypatos}{F0.Hypatissa}", in recognition of your service to the senate and the nation. 4. Anthypatos/Anthypatissa (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 310§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 5 Mischief As {M0.Anthypatos}{F0.Anthypatissa}, you have been assigned as the governor of a senatorial province. Of course, this is just a formality, as your work in the senate hardly gives you the time to travel to said province. Thankfully, you have an expansive team of bureaucrats below you, ready to deal with the day-to-day affairs of the province while you reap the fruits of their work. 5. Eparch of SimCity (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 350§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 6 Mischief Your fellow senators have elected you as the new Eparch of SimCity, placing you in charge of administrating the city and its immediate area, while also making you the second highest ranking judge in the capital. With the position also comes being the formal head of the Senate, presiding over its meetings. 6. Proedros/Proedrissa (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 370§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 7 Mischief In light of your work, you were awarded with the honorific title of "{M0.proedros}{F0.proedrissa}" - president. At this stage, you have virtually reached the top. But perhaps you might convince the other senators your work deserves a bit more recognition. 7. Protoproedros/Protoproedrissa (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 410§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM You have become the First President, the highest ranking title available to anyone in the Senate. You are well respected amongst your peers, holding a position that places you as some sort of “first among equals”. Remember the skills and connections that got you into this place of power, as they are the only thing keeping you here. |
And the ranks of the Palatine Aristocracy:
1. Nobelissimos/Nobilissima - (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 127§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM -> 1 Mischief You have been recognized as "most noble", reflecting your status as a high ranking figure in the bureaucracy of SimNation. 2. Protonobelissimos/Protonobilissima (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 210§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 2 Mischief You were granted the title of {M0.protonobelissimos}{F0.protonobilissima}, further inflating your importance amongst the nobility of SimNation. 3. Kouropalates/Kouropalatissa (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 240§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 3 Mischief As the {M0.kouropalates}{F0.kouropalatissa}, you are the one in charge of administrating the palace complex of SimCity, effectively placing a micro-kingdom of sorts in your hands. 4. Protosebastos/Protosebaste (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 270§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 4 Mischief No longer the {M0.kouropalates}{F0.kouropalatissa}, you were awarded for your former work with the honorific {M0.protosebastos}{F0.protosebaste} - the "first venerable one". 5. Protosebastohypertatos/Protosebastehypertatos (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 300§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 5 Mischief Your work doesn't stop, and neither does the recognition given to you. Becoming {M0.protosebastohypertatos}{F0.protosebastehypertatos} - the "the first supreme venerable one" - is a clear sign of that. 6. Panhypersebastos/Panhypersebaste (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 330§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 6 Mischief As {M0.panhypersebastos}{F0.panhypersebaste}, you have been recognized as "venerable above all". This title is not given lightly, so keep up the good work, for your importance and power in the bureaucratic world of SimNation are peaking. 7. Kaisar/Kaisarissa (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 400§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 7 Mischief Once a title and name which belonged to the emperors of Rome, the title of {M0.kaisar}{F0.kaisarissa} became a mere honorific in the ancient empire. With the title revived and granted to you, there is little anyone can say about your renown that hasn't been already said. 8. Sebastokrator/Sebastokratorissa (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 440§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 8 Mischief Recognised as a "venerable ruler", you now rank above all of your fellow aristocrats as their theoretical leader. It depends on you if this role remains nominal, or becomes factual. 9. Despot/Despoina (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 500§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Objectives -> 10 Mischief The position of {M0.Despot}{F0.Despoina} was created in order for SimNation to have a strong leader with considerable centralized power. With a title and rank roughly equivalent to "king", you are that leader. 10. Emperor and Autocrat/Empress and Autocrat (Mon; Tue; Wed; Thur; Fri) - 580§/h - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Many years to you, {0.SimFirstName}, faithful {M0.Emperor and Autocrat}{F0.Empress and Autocrat} of the Sims, the {0.SimLastName}, forever August. Either by political plays or simply familial connections, you now hold absolute power in SimNation. Keep and eye on the nobles and the Senate, as your position is the most coveted of all, and there are many who would do anything to take it for their own. |
And for those that wish to know, here's a list explaining what these ranks were in real-life. Take note that most came from the late Roman Empire (aka Byzantine Empire):
Main Branch: *Horeiarios - An administrator in charge of distributing food from the state granaries. *Silentarios - A title given to a class of courtiers in the Byzantine imperial court, responsible for order and silence in the Great Palace of Constantinople. The badge of office of a silentarios was a gold staff. *Vestetor - A lowly palace position and rank. The Vestitores were originally officials of the imperial wardrobe, although the title had become honorific by the 9th century. Its distinctive insignia was a fiblatorium, a cloak fastened by a fibula brooch. *Mandator - A subaltern official in the middle Byzantine Empire. The mandatores were a corps of messengers for special duties attached to the bureaux of all senior civil and military officials. *Logariastes - A 11th century type of financial official with the task of controlling expenses. *Kephale - Translated as "head", the Kephale was the governor of a small province, usually a town and its surrounding territory. *Orphanotrophos - The Orphanotrophos was the director of the imperial orphanage in Constantinople, established in the 4th century and lasting until the 13th century. It rose to become an office of great importance, ranking amongst the senior ministers of the Roman-Byzantine state. *Guardian of the Laws - Translated from "nomophylax", the holder of this judicial office presided over the law school of Constantinople. *Papias - An office reserved for eunuchs. The holder was responsible for the security and maintenance of the buildings of the imperial palaces in Constantinople, commanding an extensive staff and performing in important role in palace ceremonies. *Archon of the Mint - Translated from "archon tis charagis", this individual was in charge of minting coin and bullion in the empire. *Chartulary of the Wardrobe - Translated from "chartoularios tou vestiariou", this individual was the head of the Public Wardrobe, one of the major fiscal departments of the Byzantine/Roman Empire. *First Secretary - Translated from "protoasekretis", this individual was the head of the asekretis, a senior class of secretaries in the imperial court between the 6th and 12th centuries. *General Logothete - Translated from "logothetes tou genikou", the General Logothete was in charge of the general financial ministry of the empire. *Logothete of the Drome - Translated from "logothetes tou dromou", and also known as the Postal Logothete, this logothete was one of the senior fiscal ministers of the empire and was also the head of the department of the Public Post, also known as the "cursus publicus" in the early empire. *Logothete of the Military - Translated from "logothetes tou stratiotikou", this logothete was in charge of the pay and provisioning of the Byzantine army. However, the exact sphere of duties of the logothete is somewhat obscure. Some scholars argue that the Military Logothete supervised military affairs in general. *Grand Logothete - Translated from "megas logothetes", this logothete was a high ranking official who served as effective foreign minister of the Byzantine Empire. It was established during the Empire of Nicaea, and evolved from the Komnenian period office of "logothetes ton sekreton". *Great Intermediary - Translated from "megas mesazÅn", this office existed in the Empire of Trebizond. It also existed under the simpler title of "mesazÅn" in the court of the Byzantine Empire, and of the Despotates of Epirus and the Morea. It's holder acted as the chief minister and principal aide of the Byzantine emperor. Senate: *Endoxotatos - Translated from "gloriosissimus" (Latin for "most glorious"), this was the highest rank avaliable in the senatorial aristocracy of the Roman-Byzantine Empire during the 6th century. *Megaloprepestatos - Translated from "magnificentissimus" (Latin for "most magnificent"), this rank was granted only to the comites, and was roughly equivalent to that of "endoxotatos". *Hypatos - Translated as "the supreme one", it was a Byzantine court dignity which was originally the translation of the Latin consul. The dignity arose from the honorary consulships awarded in the late Roman Empire, and survived until the early 12th century. The feminine form of the term was hypatissa. *Anthypatos - This title was originally th traditional translation for the Latin title of proconsul. However, in the later years of the empire, it became a court dignity intended for non-eunuchs. *Eparch - The Eparch of Constantinople was originally the urban prefect of the imperial capital, the position established after the Constantinopolitan senate was made equal to that of the city of Rome. In Greek, his title was "eparch", and also served as the formal head of the Senate, presiding over its meetings. The prefect was solely responsible for the administration of the city of Constantinople and its immediate area. *Proedros - Translated as "president", this was a senior title in the Byzantine court in the 10th to 12th centuries. Originally restricted to eunuchs, the holder of the title was also the president of the Senate. *Protoproedros - Translated as "first president", the title was created after Proedros was opened to non-eunuchs in order to distinguish the most senior amongst its holders. Palatine Aristocracy: *Nobelissimos - Translated as "most noble", this title originated as an epithet to the title of Caesar, whose holder was the Roman/Byzantine Emperor's heir-apparent during the late antiquity. It became a separate dignity during the reign of Constantine I, and after the late 11th century it was given to senior army commanders. *Protonobelissimos - Translated as "first most noble", it was created due to the diluted status of the "nobilissimus" title. Eventually it too started to decline and was replaced by the augmented form "protonobelissimohypertatos". *Kouropalates - Translated as "[the one in] charge of the palace", the holder was originally charged with the maintenance of the imperial palace. It later became one of the most important dignities, ranking next to kaisar and nobelisssimos, being reserved for members of the imperial family as well. *Protosebastos - Translated as "the "first venerable one", this honorific was created by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, and was first awarded to his brother Adrianos. Later, it was given to close relatives of the emperor, such as the eldest son of a sebastokrator. *Protosebastohypertatos - Translated as "the first supreme venerable one", this compound title was created as an inflation of the title "sebastohypertatos", and was granted to the husband of the third daughter of the emperor. *Panhypersebastos - Translated as "venerable above all", this honorific was created by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, and was granted to the husband of the second daughter of the emperor. *Kaisar - The Greek form of Caesar, it was originally used to designate a subordinate co-emperor or a heir apparent. It eventually became a dignity awarded by the emperor to high-ranked and distinguished officials and became third in importance after the creation of the title "sebastokrator" by Alexios I, and fourth after Manuel I created the title "despot". By this period, the title was no longer used to designate a co-emperor or the heir. *Sebastokrator - Translated as "venerable ruler", the title was created by emperor Alexios I Komnenos and awarded to his brother Isaakios. It was in essence meaningless and signified a close relationship with the Emperor, but was at its creation the second most important title in the empire, only below that of Emperor. It became the third after the creation of "despot". *Despot - Originally used by emperors since the time of Justinian I, it was made into a separate title by Manuel I Komnenos, and the highest ranked after the emperor. The first despot was Bela III of Hungary and meant that Hungary was considered as a tributary state of the empire. In later times, it was used by the ruler of a despotate (roughly equivalent to a kingdom). *Emperor and Autocrat - Translated from "basileus kai autokrator", this became the style of the Byzantine Emperor since the early 9th century. The usage of "autokrator" designated the senior of several ruling co-emperors, who was the one that held the actual power. |
