Looks like I jumped the gun.

It's not working in another home I'm building. Maybe it's under a cabinet..?

Speaking of cabinets, there is – or was – a game issue with fridges not being accessible when they are placed in a corner underneath a straight cabinet. I never checked whehter that’s fixed meanwhile; perhaps dishwashers have the same issue? See this upload post for more info + pics: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=554253

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction; I had the same issue as many posters in this thread (dishwasher can be placed, sims refuse to use it, choosing load dishwasher will direct sim to closest sink), but placing it in a counter that is not placed under a cupboard rendered it fully functional.
