Default Come Meet Arundel!
For a few years now, I've been writing about the fictional Arundel, which is set in medieval times. Of course I have played not quite as historically accurate as history would paint the circumstances, but I have done my best.

In playing the town I have kept a daily diary of all the inhabitants from the very start. What started as a relatively small village of 20 single households has grown into a large town of 33 households and 243 people!

In 40 'years' (days) there has been drama, heartbreak, marriages, infidelity, children, death, birth, and everything in between. It has become a matriarchal society, surprisingly enough, (which is actually far more historically accurate than is commonly believed) with the women of Arundel doing a lot of the hard work to make the town grow.

In my tales, I haven't shown many pictures of who lives in Arundel, which is an oversight that I would like to correct with this thread.

So, with no further delay, I present to you my Arundel inhabitants and their stories:

The political structure:

Lady Amy Klein-The woman who will be Queen:
Original surname: Amy Kosmokos
Origin: A blind date
Aries-Popularity Aspiration/ Fortune secondary.
OTH: Science
Previously married to: Daniel Klein
Children: 4
Current Position: Lady High Chancellor

She was a townie that Daniel Klein met when hunting for a suitable spouse when he was on the outs with his former fiancee, Esther Williamson (deceased). They hit it off immediately, and soon she was his wife. She is a very dynamic and ambitious woman, who quickly decided that she wanted to be queen. A devoted mother and wife, she was loyal to her husband Daniel until she discovered his flagrant and continuous infidelity (of nearly 30 years!) with his co-worker, Anna Day. Having absolutely no tolerance for such misbehavior, she divorced him when confronted with it. She blames herself for having been so naive. Now that she is free to pursue her ambition, she has written off any future romantic dalliances. She's learned her lesson!

Sir William Potter
Origin: Created in CAS
Leo: Popularity, fortune secondary
OTH: Music & Dance
Previously married to: Anna Day Potter Suwankiri
Marital Status: married to Lady Beatrice Potter
Children: 2
Current Position: Royal Treasurer-previously Mayor of Arundel

William Potter is an original character-he knows everyone in Arundel, (or tries to). He's naturally a very outgoing and personable man who has no known enemies. He is not a very ambitious person who likes to have a fun time, while seeming to not care about his polls. However, don't be confused-he can be as charming and ingratiating in that charm to get what he wants. He was married for nearly 20 years to Anna Day Potter Suwankiri, which only ended when Anna requested a divorce from him to marry her long-time lover and co-worker, Anthony Suwankiri. That freed him to pursue and eventually marry Beatrice Dyer Bond, whom he had been deeply in love with in his carefree bachelor days but had broken off with after she married Oscar Bond.

Lady Beatrice Potter

Origin: Created in CAS
Maiden Name: Dyer
Previously married to: Oscar Bond
Children: 3 (2 deceased)
Leo: Popularity, fortune secondary
OTH: Music & Dance
Current Position: Royal Treasurer (along with her husband.)

Before she was married to William Potter, she was the loyal and devoted wife to Oscar Bond, whom she married in spite of being extremely fond of William. She's not that ambitious, seeming more to be a hostess and she's content now to be with the only man she's truly loved through the years. She's well-liked, and admired for her courage in not only facing a scandalous & humiliating divorce but also the tragic deaths of two of her children in their teens.

Lady Mayor Matilda Lawrence

Origin: born in game, first child of Brian and Viola Lawrence
2nd generation
Marital status: single
Gemini, popularity aspiration/fortune secondary
OTH: Fitness
Current position: Mayor of Arundel

For a woman who has never been to college, Matilda Lawrence has achieved quite a lot in her life. She wants to be Queen one day, but she's going to have to wait until the position opens up. Ambitious, fun loving and adventurous, she has become notorious for breaking men's hearts-and she does not really care if they're married or not. She's already had one fiance, and she's had a lot of lovers. She enjoys her freedom and does not plan on marrying anytime soon. As she says, “Why buy the cow when you can have the milk for free?”

There are also 6 Alderwomen of the Town Council to help run the town, all of whom are 2nd generation children.

Pictured are their official portraits (in the order noted, left to right)

Amy Klein
William Potter
Matilda Lawrence
Beatrice Potter.

You will notice that they are wearing the official 'chain of office' that is given to all high officials in Arundel. They are also titled, as the positions they hold come with that added perk, but no extra money!

The Knighthood:

Arundel has many employment opportunities, one of which is in the Knighthood, and many younger residents dearly want to join its' ranks. It has now been restricted to only men serving due to the nature of the profession, but that wasn't the way it started out. Right now there are 4 people employed as knights, and because the physical toll of the job is so high, 2 of them are retired early. With the younger generation coming to adulthood, there will be a lot of new faces in this sector!

Sir Grant Lum

Origin: Created in CAS
Marital Status: married to Lady Patricia Lum
Children: 1
Aquarius, Family aspiration/knowledge secondary
OTH: Sports
Current position: Retired - Knight of the Round Table

Grant was as surprised as anyone when he joined the knighthood, and became very successful at his job, mostly because he's normally a very laid back person with a genial, easy going temperament. However, underneath his genial and fun exterior is the hard-driving character that made him rise to nearly top of his profession. Well-liked and considered to be the epitome of the 'gentle knight' he retired early due to the physical toll his job extracted from him on a daily basis. In his retirement, he loves to tend his extensive gardens and has taken a second job as a minstrel, fulfilling his love of music. He is indeed the embodiment of fidelity, having been married and utterly faithful to his beloved wife, Patricia for nearly 40 years.

Anna Klein

Origin: Created in CAS
Marital Status: Married to Daniel Klein, previously divorced from Frederick Newman
Maiden Name: Day
Children: 3
Scorpio, Fortune aspiration/Family secondary
OTH: Sports
Current position: Retired - Royal Standard Bearer

When she arrived in Arundel, Anna did not want to settle down and just be a 'wife'. She is an very hard charging, competitive woman who broke the gender boundaries as the very first female knight, shocking every one with her audacity to serve alongside men. Proud, ambitious and not hesitant to go after what she wanted, Anna quickly made a name for herself not only in her career, but also in her private life. First pursuing Daniel Klein, but marrying Frederick Newman, she continued her affair with Daniel throughout her marriage. However, she paid the price for her folly when Frederick discovered her infidelity and divorced her. Undeterred by the scandal, she then demanded that Daniel make her an honest women, which he happily did after his wife divorced him. She has few friends and can be difficult to deal with. She's not the easiest person to know or like.

Lady Brenda Suwankiri

Origin: Created in CAS
Marital Status: married to Anthony Suwankiri, divorced from William Potter
Maiden Name: Clark
Children: 5
Aries-Popularity aspiration/Fortune secondary
OTH: Music & Dance
Current position: Royal Standard Bearer

Brenda arrived in Arundel with little but her ambition and drive-and yet managed to rise to nearly the top of her career, which will be ending soon due to the new rule forbidding women from being in the knighthood. Having a keen eye to her fortunes, she married William Potter, and bore him 2 children. While still married to him, though, she fell in love with the mailman, Anthony Suwankiri, who returned her affections, and they became secret lovers. He later moved into the neighborhood where they continued their affair until he demanded her to 'either fish or cut bait! I can't wait forever!”. Thus she gave William a ultimatum for divorce, which he graciously accepted and he allowed her to keep her honorary title as part of the divorce settlement. Once she and Anthony were married, she bore yet another 3 children, thus becoming a 'supermom'. She's very well respected in the town, and people tend to like her, because she's pretty straight forward in her dealings with them.

Daniel Klein

Origin: Created in CAS
Marital Status: previously married to Lady Amy Klein, now married to Anna Klein
Children: 4
Aries-Fortune aspiration/Popularity secondary
OTH: Sports
Current position: Knight Banneret

Daniel is almost notorious for his illicit affair with his present wife, because he's always prided himself on his morals. Yet, he is admired and liked by nearly everyone (except Frederick Newman, who hates him with a passion for his treachery) in town. He'd like to get to the top of his profession, but it appears that he's going to fall short in his aim. When he asked the town council about granting him a title for his work, they merely sighed and told him, 'You'd better ask your ex-wife about that issue.” Amy has forbidden any granting of titles to either him or Anna. He's reluctantly accepted the decision, but even so, he still thinks he deserves some reward for having been married to Amy.

Law

The foundation of any civilized society is the establishment of laws and the machinery to dispense them with. Arundel is no exception to this rule and thus the town has a legal sector to use for both.

It is a very popular career that appeals to many people, and the opportunities for advancement are good. However, at this time the ranks are rather closed because the top title, “Chief Justiciar” has been filled, and the Mayor has decreed that until there is an opening at the top, everyone will have to do with the lesser roles.

Here are the key players in Arundel's legal system:

Lady Patricia Lum

Origin: Created in CAS
Marital Status: Married to Sir Grant Lum
Children: 1
Capricorn, Fortune aspiration/family secondary
OTH: Cuisine
Current position: Chief Justiciar

When she's not doing her job, Patricia tends to play a lot of chess and relaxing at home. She doesn't believe in over-exerting herself, and rarely goes out to socialize. Despite her seemingly lax personality, she has had the driving ambition enough to rise to the top of her profession. She believes in working hard and relaxing just as hard! She is an excellent cook, when she bothers to do any cooking. She lets Grant do most of that, as well as the rest of the chores. Patricia thinks she's entitled to some special treatment by everyone, but she doesn't put on airs. She simply accepts everyone's attention with grace and ease. She has been almost utterly faithful to her husband but her eye has wandered as of late, with an affair with a much younger man. She is not faultless or perfect, even though she thinks she is.

Gordon McClain

Origin: Created in CAS
Marital Status: Married to Adrienne McClain
Children: 3
Taurus, Family aspiration/Popularity secondary
OTH: Games
Current position: Justice of the King's Bench

Gordon started out his life as a merchant-selling groceries to the townspeople. After amassing a decent enough fortune to raise his family with, he became bored and entered the legal system with an eye to becoming more respectable in the eyes of his friends and neighbors. He surprised himself (and everyone who knows him) with his aptitude for the job and quickly rose up through the ranks. While he has the chops to become the top legal sage in Arundel, his happy-go-lucky personality has held him back and his ambition has dimmed a bit over the years. He's close to retirement but not unhappy that he will be leaving at his present position. His pension will be enough to live on and enjoy life with.

Gerald Thomason

Origin: Created in CAS
Marital Status: Married to Brenda Go Thomason
Children: 1
Aries, Popularity aspiration/Fortune seconddary
OTH: Music & Dance
Current position: Justice of the King's Bench

Gerald knows he IS going to be Patricia's successor when she retires! He has staked out his claim on the job and is very frustrated by the fact that she got it before he did! Not that he doesn't like her, but he believes that he should have been chosen and was very disappointed when she was instead. He's ambitious and almost ruthless in his quest for the top job-not very well liked by others, his hard-driving nature puts people off when they meet him. As a result he doesn't have many friends and most people wonder how his wife puts up with him. They rather avoid him. Serious and not given to gossip or idle chatter, he doesn't like to mingle with others. His family treats him very carefully and respectfully as a result.

Ooh a ye olde world! How does one decide to be Queen? Is there no bloodline-passed-down-ordained-by-the-maker type of royalty or is it more of 'those who work for it become the royalty' type of societies? Are marriages arranged for family perks between families? Are there any class restrictions?

Uh oh! My social bar is low - that's why I posted today.

There was no royal family and everyone is eligible to be elected Queen or King if they so choose the want-in fact, some monarchies actually started out this way in the real world:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elective_monarchy

As for arranged marriages, I gave up because the pixels refuse to be dictated to in matters of the heart. There are no real class restrictions except for those in the criminal career-they cannot get into the royal family no matter how hard they try, and they're considered lower-class by everyone. Which is why Terrance Greene and his wife gave up their careers in crime, so their sons would not be tainted with that label.

It's an elective office, and if a pixel works hard enough for the job, they should be at least considered for it. Once the office holder dies, the next person with all the skills is in position to take over-but they must have the LTW to actually be in the career, not just in politics. "Become Queen or KIng" is the default LTW for the default replacement career.

I've decided that there will be no inherited titles or positions whatsoever-thus giving everyone a chance for fame, and fortune. Call it a 'meritocracy' if anything.

It's available at PBK in case anyone wants to try it out:
https://www.medievalsims.com/forums...careers#p106033

Morganna and other people made a whole bunch of DR careers just for the medieval times, and I use all of them:

Law Enforcement

Like any growing town, Arundel has to have men who protect the citizens against all crime-they're dedicated to serve and protect Arundel. These are the men of Arundel's small constabulary:

Caleb Vatore:
Origin: Created in CAS
Aries, Fortune aspiration, Pleasure secondary
OTH: Music and Dance
Marital Status: Married to Brenda Vatore
Children: 4
Current Position: Shire Reeve

When he arrived in Arundel with his sister Lillith, Caleb was a vampire looking for new hunting grounds, but he soon became disenchanted with the sheer idea of doing so. Instead, he and Lillith took a mysterious potion that turned them into human beings. Newly freed from being a predator, he went about trying to make his way in the town. The first job he had ended in disaster, and then he tried his hand at business, which also did not work out. Desperate for any kind of success, he became a law enforcement officer, and found that he had discovered his calling. He was very surprised when he not only succeeded in his work, he excelled in it, and was rewarded with the top position of Shire Reeve for his dedication. He wasn't even that invested in it!

Curtis Gregory
Origin: Created in CAS
Cancer, Family aspiration, Knowledge secondary
Marital Status: Married to Lillith Vatore
Children: 2
Current Position: Captain of the Day Watch

Curtis will deny loudly that he owes his position to the fact that his brother-in-law is the reason he's on the force if anyone is rude enough to infer it. In fact, he would like to retire very soon, and will as soon as he reunites with Lillith. He will admit, though that he did get carried away with his wife's niece and bitterly regrets having done so. All he wants to do is enjoy the rest of his life in peace and quiet with Lillith. No more questions about his fidelity, all right?!

Anthony Suwankiri:
Origin: Townie
Aries, Popularity aspiration, family secondary
Marital Status: married to Lady Brenda Suwankiri
Children: 3
Present position: Captain of the Night Watch

Anthony likes to think of himself as an upright citizen and a good LE officer. The truth is far different...but he's not going to get into that. When he fell in love with Brenda Potter it was for him love at first sight and he was a very, very patient man until one day he demanded that she stop leading him on with false promises of leaving her husband. Thankfully Brenda did summon up the courage to do so, while facing public scorn. He's grateful that she was willing to marry him and have children with him even when she had already had 2 by her former husband. He's a dedicated career officer, who would like to someday succeed Caleb, who he does not like or know very well. Call it professional jealousy.

Medical Staff

Arundel has a very experienced and competent medical staff, complete with teaching doctors. Women are drawn to this profession, which is naturally one of caring for the sick-however, the leading physicians are all men. Thankfully most Arundelians are hardy folk!

Here's the roster of Arundel's medical profession:

Sir Jordan Moseley
Origin: Created in CAS
Aries, Family aspiration, knowledge secondary
OTH: Science
Marital Status: divorced
Children: 2
Current position: Royal Physician

Sir Jordan has the most attractive trait of any doctor-an EXCELLENT bedside manner, which he has used in more than a few instances to woo women with into his bed. Sympathetic to sad stories, he soon charms any woman who looks at him twice into a relationship. He's been married 2 times, and has had numerous affairs but is thought of no less for this. Nevertheless, he is a dedicated and wise man who has risen to the top of his profession with a drive that is not matched by many. Funny enough, he really does not like to talk about medicine in private life, and would rather discuss science-at least out of bed.

Edwin Tyler
Origin: Created in CAS
Gemini, knowledge aspiration, Romance Secondary
OTH: Sports
Marital Status: Married to Katherine Klein
Children: 5
Current position: . Medinciae Magister (teaching doctor)

Like his boss, Edwin is well known for his romantic savoir-faire and has been embroiled in scandal more than a few times. He's known as the guy you don't cross and he's been responsible for several people leaving medicine as a result of it, including his ex-wife, Marion and his former friend Bobby Carroll-which resulted from a scandalous romantic entanglement between the three of them. He's been married three times but likes to pursue women. Unfortunately he's been caught in flagrante delicto more than a few times as well. He was reportedly the inspiration for a later doctor named Don Lothario, it is rumored. Lord knows, he's got the credentials! He'd like to become Royal Physician someday, hopefully before he dies!

Randall Allen
Origin: Created in CAS
Pisces, Knowledge Aspiration, family secondary
OTH: Tinkering
Marital Status: Married to Dominique Allen
Children: 4
Current position: Medicinae Doctor

Randall is not a womanizer, and he prides himself on his moral and personal conduct. Married twice, he met Dominque through a blind date and fell instantly in love with her after being widowed at a young age. Well liked, he conducts himself in a very proper way and would not dream of ever being actively unfaithful to his beloved wife. He is a serious man, with little taste for fun and games. He finds his co-workers to be a bit on the absurd side. He's the guy who fixes things when not talking about work.

Is Arundel historically accurate?

Today I was looking up the actual REAL Arundel, (which is correctly spelled even though my spellcheck is always throwing fits.) and I was delighted to learn that it is a much conserved town in West Sussex, England, complete with a Roman Catholic cathedral.

Historically speaking, I'm as accurate as anyone could be:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arundel

So you see, the fictional Arundel does have a real life counterpart! They even named the church "Our Lady" but not the rest of my title 'of eternal sorrow.'

There is also a real Arundel Town Hall, just as there is in the fictional version:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arundel_Town_Hall

Arundel Town Hall is a municipal building in Maltravers Street in Arundel, West Sussex, England. The building, which is the meeting place of Arundel Town Council, is a Grade II listed building.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arundel_Castle

Arundel Castle is a restored and remodelled medieval castle in Arundel, West Sussex, England. It was established by Roger de Montgomery in the 11th century. Since the 11th century, the castle has been the seat of the Earls of Arundel and the Dukes of Norfolk. It is a Grade I listed building.

Right now it is spring 1140 in the fictional Arundel.

So you can compare them below are pictures of the fictional Arundel Castle and "Our Lady of Eternal Sorrow". I'm afraid I'm not very good at motte and bailey construction for the castle, and didn't think to put flying buttresses on the church.

The actual Cathedral is of later construction, which is why it does have architectural elements not seen in the fictional version:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arundel_Cathedral

Pictured left and right:

The fictional Arundel Castle (which Amy does NOT want to live in..much preferring a smaller abode), and "Our Lady of Eternal Sorrow".

Community Lots of Arundel

Today I bring you some pictures of the various public places Arundelians like to hang out in:

From left to right:

* The fishing hole: where you can fish, relax in the tidal pool (better known as a hot tub to you.)

* The ice skating rink-only available during the winter, of course!

* Another shot of the fishing hole

* The Italian Gardens where nobody ever goes-such a shame, too.

* The roller skating place-everyone goes here, though!

I've noted for my own purposes whether or not the highest position receives any kind of honors or titles upon attainment. That's where the "sir" or "lady" labels come from and under what circumstances they can be granted.

Most of them do have LTW's related to them, and many males want to get into the Knighthood, which is now only attained by males, dependent on their military service once they have graduated from University.

Other popular careers are in politics, (a lot of women wanna be Queen!) and Law. For some reason everyone wants to be handing out justice!
There are also a lot of people who want to go into gaming (DR "Cunning Artificer").

These are not easy careers unless one is prepared to work hard for the promotions. Some of them require very long hours and late nights-and those who do work late at night usually come home dead tired.

As stated before, there are now restrictions on three careers for men only-the military, law enforcement and athletic. Women were barred from those in the actual time, so it's more historically accurate. There are no other restrictions on the remaining careers.

Arundel, in sum, is full of some very ambitious and hard driving pixels who love nothing more than having a good time, making money and having woohoo with the ones they love.

The various residences of Arundel

There are a lot (46 houses!) of residences in Arundel, but here are a few pictures to show the variety of architecture used:

From left to right:

1. The Reginald Gregory house-where Lillith Vatore Gregory and her husband, Curtis, raised their family. It is now owned by her son Reginald, who is raising his own family. It has two baths, and 3 bedrooms. Their teens need their privacy!

2. The Vatore Estate: just the front yard with the mail box. The property features a small pond, and a roller skating area. Owned by David and Belinda Vatore, it was handed down to David when his parents (Lillith's brother Caleb and his wife Brenda Vatore) moved into a smaller house. It's the largest property in Arundel. The house is a one story manor with 2 bathrooms and a very large dining/living room.

3. Street View from the Men's Boarding House:
Here is a long shot view of what half of the town's streets look like. (Never mind the people. Let's just say they were romantically involved: Terrance Greene and Katherine Tyler.)

4. The Klein Manor: Before she moved into her present residence, Amy Klein lived in this house with her family. She loved to buy trees and flowers. She also hired a gardener to take care of the extensive garden because she believes that aristocrats such as herself should never have to do hard work! Her son Charles has taken over ownership with his wife Isabel, whom you see talking to another resident.
