Default Changing GUID question
https://disemporium.dreamwidth.org/11530.html

I am working with the stove file from this page and the only thing I've accomplished so far is crashing the game.

This file is a retexture, I was also graciously provided with a copy of the original file. The original is a rusty texture, the retexture is black and loses some of the detail on the oven doors. I would like to have both versions, but of course they are the same file so only one works at a time. I first attempted a tutorial to make the item recolorable as it is "not designable" in the game. That would be my preferred solution, but it didn't work for me.

Then I thought I'd try cloning it so I could have one of each recolor, but even I knew I'd have to change the GUID for that. I finally realized that the "get GUID" button doesn't work and I found an article regarding using a hex generator to make up a new GUID.

Do I have to replace the GUID on each line? Because there are five lines for each file in the resource list and I am confused. I tried just changing the first one on the first file and I could see the stove in the catalog but not place it. Then I changed the first line on each file and I could place the stove, but the game crashed when I tried to leave the lot for the neighborhood. I never got to the point of actually checking how the clone functions.

As far as I can see there is a recolorable subset for the "Zoo_blacky_GHSAlterOfen" (it only appears to need one - the clean/dirty versions are ingame states for when items have been used and are dirty), and two for the "Victorian Fire Surround MESH Dicreasy" file. No idea about the original file, but it seems the version from the link is an updated version.

It should be enough to recolor via the Object Workshop (click "Open..." and find your file, then choose "recolor" from the dropdown list).

Extract the recolor files from the original (TXTR resource, click "Export..." button), and use those to make your recolor. There shouldn't be a need to make a standalone version if all you want is a recolor.

If you're retexturing, use the Object Workshop, open the file with "choose file" and choose "recolor". You should not change the OBJD for a plain recolor file.

Most objects (excluding NH deco, and some build items) can be recolored that way.

The fire surround is recolorable, I’ve done a half dozen different variations with different colors of the wood, the interior and the walls.

I made a recolor of the stove, SimPE allows me to go through the process, but in the game when I click on the stove with the design tool I get a message saying “this item is not designable” instead of a menu with recolor choices. If something is recolorable you will at least get the menu even if there is only one choice.

Are you recoloring the version from the link or the original file? Try first with the version from the link, as it should have updated subsets (and looks like it also has recolors). You likely have to compare the textures to see if they're compatible - the topic mentioned having re-UVmapped some stuff.

If you see no other way than making a standalone version, close and reopen the (original) file (don't touch any of the resources!), then do "Tools --> Fix Integrity" and change the name slightly to make it standalone from the other version, and save the file. Then update the GUID(s). Only change the GUID in the first box, directly to the left of "Get GUID". Don't touch the four GUID boxes below. Also tick "update MMATs" BEFORE clicking "update".

If there are more than one OBJD, make sure you only update MMATs for the main GUID/OBJD (usually the one with the lowest GUID number, or no numbers after the main name in the name string). You need to put unique GUIDs for each OBJD (you can generate one GUID and go one number/letter up from the rest. This one has "0x002FF0CC", "0x002FF0CD" and "0x002FF0CE" as an example) - GUIDs can have numbers 0-9 + letters A-F. A comes after 9, and 0 comes after F, so it's 00-09, 0A-0F, 10-19, 1A-1F, ... , 90-9F, A0-AF, etc.

As for making items recolorable, something being wrong in the GMND tends to be a common culprit for crashing, especially if the Blocklist hasn't been properly added. The SHPE/MMAT/TXTR/TXMTs having issues more often than not leads to things just not working the way you want ("not recolorable", "no pic", second subset not showing, etc.). Often it's just getting a name/value wrong in one of the boxes that causes a problem. Only today I had a second subset not show because of an extra space at the end in one of the "value" boxes - that one took me a while, because nothing else was wrong in the files

If you're having issues with the edited version not being recolorable ingame, it could be because it lacks a "tsDesignModeEnabled" line in the blocklist. Other than that I can't find any obvious issues.
I added the line to the file + a recolor file below (it looks the same, it's just to see if it shows up), if you want to test.

Thank you. This works. It even works with the recolors I made before I realized recolors weren't working and it gives me the opportunity to look at how you changed it and learn something.
