I watched Sala Samobójców (Suicide Room) somewhere in 2011 when I was at uni. Back then I didn't like this movie. I found it bizarre and illogical, probably because I was too immature to understand it and didn't know this film was partially about me but I didn't want to admit it. I think I'll rewatch it, this time from a different perspective as a grown-up man, a teacher who has his own class. I'll watch it and try to analyse the psychological aspect of it and try to analyse the relationships between people and the consequences of their actions.

Ms. 45 (1981): After being attacked and raped twice in one day, a timid, mute seamstress goes insane, takes to the streets of New York City after dark, and randomly shoots men with a .45 caliber pistol.
My Comment: I guess this film has a cult following and, like many such films, it shows, with obvious fake blood that looks more like tabasco sauce, cheesy acting, 1970s pRon-style music (so I'm told), a couple of decent jump scares, and dark humor, all mixed together in a mish-mash of violence. The two rape scenes at the beginning are probably more elaborately acted out than would be necessary in a more serious film, but they, along with the gruesome act that follows, do well to quickly grab the viewers' interest and keep it for the duration of the 80-minute film.
I'll call it "Good", but on the lower end of it and with the caveat that the viewer needs to be in the mood for something a little kitschy.

Golden Boy (Japan, 1995, dubbed in English)
This six-episode original video animation (OVA) follows Kintaro Oe, a wandering ex-law student who travels Japan taking odd jobs to learn about life. Despite his perverted tendencies and clumsy first impressions, Kintaro’s intelligence and determination often lead him to unexpected success. Golden Boy blends over-the-top comedy, satire, and surprisingly heartfelt moments, all backed by energetic animation and expressive character designs.

Each episode introduces Kintaro to a new workplace—whether it's a software company, a fast-food restaurant, or a swimming school—where he hilariously stumbles through challenges while secretly mastering new skills. The humor is outrageous, but there’s also an underlying theme of self-improvement and perseverance.

My comment: A hilarious and fast-paced comedy that mixes ecchi humor with sharp wit and an oddly inspiring protagonist. Kintaro’s wild misadventures make for an entertaining and surprisingly clever series. I'm not an anime fan, but if you're searching for something interesting, witty and hilarious, full with everyday situations—something different from classical Hollywood productions—this '90s masterpiece is for you!

Sunshine (1973): When a young woman who is living in the woods with her struggling-musician husband and her very young daughter discovers that she has terminal cancer, she begins to tape-record a journal of the time she has left, hoping to leave something precious for her daughter.
My Comment: Based on a true story, this was the most watched made-for-TV film in US history at the time it first aired. I myself never watched it until now. I do remember there was much talk about it in the media at the time, as well as among the girls in my junior high school. The film features several songs written by John Denver, albeit not sung by him, and which probably helped to popularize his music. As an aside, the actor Cliff DeYoung, who plays the young husband and struggling musician, is actually an accomplished musician in real life and I like his cover of 'Sunshine On My Shoulders' better than Denver's.
I wouldn't rank the film as "Very Good", but certainly on the high end of "Good" and worth watching.

Death Becomes Her (USA, 1992)
A dark comedy with a supernatural twist, Death Becomes Her follows Madeline (Meryl Streep) and Helen (Goldie Hawn), two vain rivals who discover a mysterious potion granting them eternal youth—at a horrifying cost. As their bodies defy death in increasingly grotesque ways, their feud escalates into absurd, over-the-top chaos.

Bruce Willis delivers an unexpectedly comedic performance as Ernest, the bumbling, miserable plastic surgeon caught between the two women. The film’s mix of biting satire, macabre humor, and groundbreaking special effects makes it a cult classic. Its themes of vanity, immortality, and karma are wrapped in a visually dazzling and wickedly fun package.

My comment: A hilarious and stylish dark comedy with iconic performances, sharp satire, and ahead-of-its-time visual effects. A must-watch for fans of campy, gothic humor.

Scary Movie (USA, 2000)
A raunchy and ridiculous parody of classic horror films, Scary Movie takes aim at Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and other genre staples with over-the-top slapstick and crude humor. The story follows a group of high school students being stalked by a masked killer, but the real focus is on the nonstop jokes, absurd situations, and pop culture references.

The film’s cast, led by Anna Faris (Cindy Campbell), shines in their exaggerated performances, with standout comedic moments from Shawn and Marlon Wayans. While the humor is lowbrow and outrageous, the film succeeds in delivering laugh-out-loud moments, making it a defining entry in the spoof genre.

My comment: A wildly immature but undeniably funny horror parody that became a comedy classic. If you love crude humor and exaggerated horror tropes, this is a must-watch.

The Truman Show (USA, 1998)
A thought-provoking blend of drama, comedy, and psychological thriller, The Truman Show follows Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), an ordinary man who slowly realizes that his entire life has been a meticulously crafted reality TV show. As he begins questioning his world, Truman’s journey becomes a powerful exploration of free will, media control, and the nature of reality itself.

Jim Carrey delivers a phenomenal performance, balancing humor with emotional depth, while Ed Harris as Christof, the show’s god-like creator, adds an eerie layer to the film’s themes. The movie’s clever cinematography, hidden cameras, and staged world reinforce the unsettling feeling that Truman is constantly watched—mirroring modern concerns about surveillance and artificial reality.

My comment: A brilliantly crafted and deeply insightful film that remains more relevant than ever. With a perfect mix of humor, heart, and suspense, The Truman Show challenges us to question what’s real and who’s really in control.

The Double (UK, 2013)
Inspired by Dostoevsky’s novel, The Double follows Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg), a timid office worker whose life unravels when he meets his confident and charismatic doppelgänger, James Simon. As James effortlessly takes over Simon’s life—winning over his colleagues and love interest—Simon’s grip on reality begins to slip.

Director Richard Ayoade crafts a surreal, Kafkaesque world with dimly lit offices, eerie sound design, and a mounting sense of paranoia. Eisenberg delivers a brilliant dual performance, making Simon’s struggle both tragic and darkly comedic. The film explores themes of identity, alienation, and the fear of being invisible in a bleak bureaucratic society.

My comment: A visually striking and deeply unsettling psychological thriller. The Double blends dark humor with existential horror, creating an unforgettable descent into madness.

Phantom Thread (UK/USA, 2017)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s psychological drama follows Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis), a perfectionist fashion designer in 1950s London, whose carefully controlled life is disrupted when he falls for Alma (Vicky Krieps), a strong-willed waitress. Their relationship becomes a tense power struggle, blurring the lines between love, obsession, and control.

The film’s hauntingly beautiful cinematography, meticulous costume design, and mesmerizing score by Jonny Greenwood create an intoxicating atmosphere. Day-Lewis delivers a masterful performance in his final film role, while Krieps matches his intensity, making Alma a compelling and unpredictable force in his life.

My comment: A hypnotic and unsettling study of love, power, and obsession. With stunning performances and exquisite direction, Phantom Thread is an elegant yet twisted masterpiece.

The Duke of Burgundy (UK, 2014)
A hypnotic and dreamlike exploration of love and control, The Duke of Burgundy follows Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and Evelyn (Chiara D’Anna), two women in a secluded European mansion who engage in a complex relationship built on rituals of dominance and submission. However, as their desires shift, the balance of power becomes increasingly unstable.

Director Peter Strickland crafts an atmosphere of surreal beauty, using soft lighting, lush visuals, and an evocative score to create a sensual yet unsettling world. The film masterfully explores themes of dependency, routine, and the lengths people go to in order to satisfy their partners—raising the question of where love ends and control begins.

My comment: A mesmerizing and deeply intimate look at the complexities of love and power. With stunning visuals and a haunting atmosphere, The Duke of Burgundy is a poetic, slow-burning masterpiece.

Amadeus (USA, 1984)
A lavish and dramatic retelling of the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Amadeus is told from the perspective of his rival, Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), who is consumed by envy over Mozart’s divine talent. The film explores the genius, excess, and tragedy of Mozart’s life, blending historical fiction with stunning performances.

Tom Hulce delivers an unforgettable portrayal of Mozart, capturing both his brilliance and reckless nature, while Abraham’s Salieri adds a powerful layer of jealousy and regret. With breathtaking music, grand set design, and a rich narrative, Amadeus remains one of the most compelling biopics ever made.

My comment: A masterful and emotionally gripping portrait of genius and rivalry. Even if you’re not a fan of classical music, Amadeus is a mesmerizing cinematic experience.

The Wolf of Wall Street (USA, 2013)
Martin Scorsese’s high-energy biopic follows Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), a stockbroker who rises to obscene wealth through corruption and fraud, only to face a spectacular downfall. The film is a wild ride through the excesses of Wall Street, filled with dark comedy, outrageous behavior, and unrelenting energy.

DiCaprio gives one of his most electrifying performances, perfectly capturing Belfort’s charm and self-destruction. Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie also shine, adding humor and depth to the story. Scorsese’s direction keeps the film fast-paced and entertaining, even as it critiques greed and moral decay.

My comment: A thrilling and hilarious depiction of unchecked ambition and excess. The Wolf of Wall Street is both wildly entertaining and a sharp critique of financial corruption.

Capote (USA, 2005)
This intimate biopic follows Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) during the writing of his groundbreaking true-crime novel In Cold Blood. As Capote investigates the brutal murder of a Kansas family, he forms a complex relationship with one of the killers, Perry Smith, blurring the line between empathy and manipulation.

Hoffman’s performance is extraordinary, capturing Capote’s charisma, wit, and emotional unraveling with precision. The film is quiet and haunting, diving deep into the emotional toll of genius and the moral ambiguity of turning tragedy into art.

My comment: A powerful and haunting portrayal of an artist consumed by his own creation. Hoffman's performance is unforgettable—this is biographical storytelling at its finest.

La Vie en Rose (France, 2007)
This moving French biopic tells the tragic and passionate story of Édith Piaf (Marion Cotillard), the legendary singer whose powerful voice was matched only by her turbulent life. From a difficult childhood to global fame, and from intense love affairs to heartbreaking addiction, the film captures both her brilliance and her suffering.

Cotillard delivers a mesmerizing, Oscar-winning performance, fully transforming into Piaf with raw emotion and intensity. The film jumps between time periods, creating a fragmented but poetic portrait of a woman whose music was inseparable from her pain.

My comment: A deeply emotional and beautifully acted tribute to a music icon. Cotillard’s performance is breathtaking—this film lingers in the heart long after it ends.

Steve Jobs (USA, 2015)
Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Aaron Sorkin, Steve Jobs offers a sharp, dialogue-driven portrait of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs (Michael Fassbender), focusing on three pivotal product launches. The film doesn’t aim to glorify or demonize Jobs—it paints a complex picture of a brilliant but difficult man driven by vision and obsession.

Fassbender delivers a commanding performance, with a strong supporting cast including Kate Winslet as loyal marketing exec Joanna Hoffman. The film’s tight structure, clever pacing, and emotionally charged confrontations offer an intimate look at the mind behind the tech revolution.

My comment: Intense, intelligent, and layered. Steve Jobs is not a typical biopic—it’s a fast-paced character study full of sharp dialogue and emotional weight.

Control (UK, 2007)
This stylish and tragic biopic tells the story of Ian Curtis (Sam Riley), the enigmatic frontman of post-punk band Joy Division. Set against the bleak backdrop of 1970s England, the film chronicles Curtis’s rise in the music scene, his battle with epilepsy and depression, and his eventual suicide at age 23.

Shot in striking black and white, director Anton Corbijn (a longtime music photographer) brings raw visual beauty and emotional restraint to the film. Riley’s debut performance is haunting and heartfelt, capturing the fragility and intensity of Curtis’s brief life.

My comment: A haunting, poetic tribute to a tortured artist. Control is as emotionally gripping as it is visually stunning—a must-watch for music lovers.
