Chapter 1

Velsa Bennett was born on an October morning during Praaven's St Crispin's Day Festival.
Catherine, Velsa's mother, had been desperate to rid herself of an overdue pregnancy so had walked around the fair for three hours in an effort to induce labour. Unfortunately I don't have a picture to prove any of this because I made all of that last sentence up just now.

Nevertheless, here is a ̶n̶i̶c̶e̶ ̶s̶c̶r̶e̶e̶n̶s̶h̶o̶t̶ Medieval painting of Velsa and Catherine at the same festival 15 years later - that poor minstrel must have been exhausted!

For Mother, it felt like forever and a day had passed since her and her daughter had had some real time together.
It was also the day when Catherine learned of her daughter's dangerous ambitions...
"What do you mean you walked away? Are you crazy?" Screeched Catherine.
"I don't want to be involved with HIM Mother, he's the CRAZY one!" replied Velsa.
Catherine was dumbfounded by her daughter's apparent petulance, but Velsa didn't seem to care: "I want more to a man than Martin Boatman!"

Previously, as part of The St Crispin's Day celebrations, the girls had enjoyed a nice glass or two of warm mead (see above post). Absent from The Castle that day too was the Noble Knight, Sir Martin Boatman. He spotted Velsa and swiftly accosted the girl, leading her away for a private talk. . .
Martin had decided he wanted to make a woman out of this young peasant who he had often noticed around Court; she had become a token for his roving eye to collect, and the young girls always seemed to be the easiest ones to brush away later.
Velsa had also noticed Martin around The Castle; he was the young Prince Seth's main companion, and we all know how insane Prince Seth can be:

Therefore, based on the Medieval strict law of 'Guilt By Association", Velsa made the seemingly reckless decision to walk away almost as soon as she became aware of Martin's badly veiled intentions; she hot-footed it out of there like a leper with a free box of body-glue!
Now, in any similar situation - with any other 'street-rat' - Martin's head would have surely glowed with incandescent rage at the impertinence of a peasant refusing his desirable companionship. It is highly likely that he wouldn't have even allowed a young serf like Velsa to disrespect his generosity by rejecting his companionship in such a way. He would have either ambushed her on the spot, or had her declared a witch! (This is purely speculation on Martin's part as it can't really be proven because no previous girls in Velsa's situation had ever dared to refuse his advances.) In spite of all of that, the feelings Martin experienced as he watched Velsa's slender figure strut its way boldly out of the door was excitement, wonder and something deeper than simple desire. . .

Chapter 2

As time passes at Praaven Castle, Velsa begins to win the affections of Queen Elsbeth....

And Martin continues courting the friendship of Prince Seth. Seth feels like nobody apart from Martin understands his complex personality.
Martin values the friendship too as it keeps him in favour with King Marcadius, thus shielding him from being sent off into battle.
Since the last chapter, Martin has tried his best to ignore Velsa, but nowadays Praaven Castle seems to have shrunk in size since the days when he wasn't avoiding her.

However, a year passes almost without incident.

Today Velsa is asking her mother what chores she can do to help out around the castle.
"Clean the bath-house if you like my lovely." is Catherine's suggestion. So off Velsa goes.

WHOOPS!
"I deeply apologise Majesty!" Velsa turns away faster than her cheeks can turn a deep Blossom Pink.
"Nonsense!" Yells Prince Seth and turns to Martin:
"Hey Old Boaty, do you mind? These wenches have to work or they'll become The Devil's Host!"
Martin has no valid reason to disagree with The Prince's suggestion. Inside he is panicking but quickly manages to mask his shock with a vacant, uninterested-looking nod.

Anxious to propitiate The Prince, Velsa quickly sets about cleaning up. The Prince, however, is in the mood for some entertainment:
"Tell me something Girl: What is it like to be so poor and having to clean up for somebody so rich? Tell me emotions, details - I want details!"

"Well, Majesty, I don't see myself as poor when I am so lucky as to keep the company of Your Royal Highness's here at the castle."
Martin marvels at her eloquent, albeit faked, reply. He is completely beguiled by the overwhelming beauty that accompanies her voice. Prince Seth is not nearly as impressed:
"Oh that's a stupid answer, and you're a stupid girl for thinking of such nonsense!"
Velsa cringes with dreadful anticipation; unfortunately she has encountered The Prince's mood swings far too many times.

"What do you say Old Boaty? This one needs flushing with the rats! Are you game?"
But before Martin can think of an objection,
something happens that ALWAYS ruins Seth's day and he immediately leaps out of the water, like a frog from a boiling cauldren:
"MARGARET! CAN'T YOU CONTROL YOUR CHILDREN? EVERYONE OUT OF THE WATER!"
Margaret's clucking responses don't warrant the reply Seth needs so his rant continues:
"WAS IT YOU ALDERUS? Let me guess, BARBORINA!? YOU POOPED IN MY BATH AGAIN! YOU NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY CHICKLINGS!!"

Velsa tries to hide her smile as she watches the fresh remnants of chicken poop float to the bottom of the tub, though all too quickly her stifled amusement begins to dissipate.
"Fetch my sword Boaty!" bellows The Prince.
Velsa turns away so as not to witness the needless execution of Seth's baby chicks.

She couldn't have been more wrong. . .
"Come here girl!" Seth seethes.
"My bath requires a deep cleanse, and we all know the best way to fulfill that task is with the blood of a virgin!"

Martin can't stand to see his crazy companion behave so stupidly towards Velsa and takes a crazy risk to save her, though he dare not entertain the motives controlling his behavior right now.
"Seth, you dumpling! That's WRONG! Only water can be cleansed with the blood of a noble, not a virgin!"
The Prince looks confused for a moment but quickly realises his error:
"Of course! Because a noble's blood outranks all peasant virgins'!"
"Exactly!" Replies Martin, and holds out his arm.

"There, lucky your blood isn't worthy! Thank Sir Boaty for taking your place why don't you?"
Velsa manages a muffled "Thank You" before picking up her broom and dashing away.
What does this mean? Velsa feels deranged with confusion: Martin ALWAYS goes along with what The Prince wants, so why did he do that to spare her?

Chapter 3

Today is King Marcadius' 44th Birthday. The Queen and her ladies-in-waiting have arranged entertainment for The Big Day.

The King would rather be doing other things, but resists throwing a tantrum at having to endure such monotonous drivel.

Velsa is becoming increasingly closer with The Queen; Elsbeth doesn't much trust her own ladies as they were all chosen for her by her husband, therefore Velsa has unofficially become Her Grace's most trusted and loyal serf!

And Martin has become The Queen's Serf's most infatuated admirer! In other words - he's now got it bad for Velsa.

The young girl has consumed his waking world and all he ever finds himself doing is craving her affections.

Martin watches her, captivated. Her youthful beauty, combined with her 'joie de vivre' attitude and lack of noble manners is something he finds thrilling; it's such a refreshing change from all the usual moralistic, prissy attitudes prevalent at Court. He decides he HAS to find out more about Velsa. Later that day he decides that he must speak with her.
"Excuse me Mi'Lady,"
No Martin, she's far from one of those, try again.
Martin coughs away his nerves.
"Apologies, sorry, I mean, Girl... Erm, Velsa!"
Well done Martin, you've now broken all Court Protocol and addressed a female servant not only formally, but by her first name. Velsa is astonished as Martin takes her hand.
Devoured emotionally by the moment he starts to blurt out suppressed sentences that Velsa has no understanding of, but had taken what seemed to Martin an age to think of. Things like: "Forbidden fruit is by far the sweetest, though they say 'Variety is the spice of life!'"
The words might have flown far above Velsa's head but the gaze from Martin's eyes and the delicate caress of his Gentleman's fingers provokes her instincts into sudden realisation

"Please excuse me Sir, I am on an errand for The Queen." Velsa has no idea how to react in such a situation so is thankful for the valid excuse to get away from it.
"BUT WAIT!" Martin calls after her, "I HAVE A POEM!"

Several corridors later...

Velsa has finally escaped the crazy Lord Boatman. She takes a breath to consider what just happened and quickly convinces herself that 'Old Boaty' has finally followed The Prince down the cerebral rivers of desolation.
"Yes," she thinks, "He's gone stark-raving bonkers! Either that or he's on some crazy dare game with Prince Seth."

Lord Simpson doesn't look amused with Velsa's message from The Queen but Velsa isn't paying attention; she is remembering the look in Martin's eyes and the touch of his hand, he seemed so genuine. What a gifted actor he must be!

"Were you seen?" Elsbeth asks anxiously.
Velsa responds by spending the next few minutes recounting who she might or might not have seen on the way to their secret meeting place; The Queen can be quite neurotic when it comes to confidential issues.
Elsbeth relaxes and Velsa is free to think about the rest of her chores for the day. But her mind is not on the job.

She is hoping beyond hope that the impossible has happened.

Could it be that a Noble Knight from The Royal Court of New Praaven has fallen in love with this insignificant 'Street-Rat'?

The next morning Velsa has her question answered.

"Shouldn't be long Your Grace." Velsa is preparing Princess Matilda's Pony for her riding lesson. Elsbeth is a very hands-on mother and likes to involve herself in her daughter's upbringing; letting the nannies do it all, produced Seth.
The Queen is certain that she won't make the same mistake again.

Martin is determined to meet with his new-found love and ambushes Velsa the minute he sees The Queen absent herself from the stables.

Velsa hears the door close behind her so spins around.
To her delight, disbelief and yes, distrust - it's him!

Her heart forces passions through conduits of joy and it's hard to breathe now Velsa can feel the attraction oozing from him. She knows as he walks towards her slowly - Martin Boatman is for real!
"Please, fair, sweet maiden whom they call Velsa, may I take but a moment of your time?"
No grievance presented itself throughout Velsa's nodding reply so Martin takes the opportunity.

He fulfills the powerful desire to touch her again, to feel her skin and the beauty of her complexion. Velsa is a little freaked out by his forward nature but Martin soothes her with his words:
"Could it be that I have discovered the most alluring of jewels buried beneath such a mire of grime and vermin?"

Again, Velsa isn't sure exactly what that means but she persuades herself that she is being compared to a fancy necklace.
"My heart needs to know how I can rescue such a prize from so dark and ghastly a taint?" Continues Martin.
Now Velsa is completely lost.
"I don't know what you mean!. .but. .Oh!...THE QUEEN!"

Velsa throws the saddle on the pony just as Elsbeth returns for Matilda's lesson.
"Sir Boatman! What are you doing down here?" Elsbeth asks.

Martin tells his first lie to The Queen: "I'm on a private mission for The Prince."
Big mistake Martin; your ill-chosen lie just confirmed what Velsa was fearing the most!!

Chapter 4

Catherine is comforting her daughter after the nasty incident with 'Old Boaty'.

"Them two is naught but trouble me little love. They're both as barmy as hungry hogs they are!"
"But how could he seem so real? I HATE SETH FOR MAKING HIM DO THAT!"
"Hush dear, walls have ears you know!"

Indeed they do!

Martin's intent was to visit Velsa unannounced and surprise her with not only his master-plan, but a small token of his affections. However, the conversation he stumbled upon has him quite befuddled. Has that rancid friend of his, Prince Seth, been interfering with Martin's plans? If that's the case - who else could know?

"He said it straight to The Queen's face, mother, 'I'm on a private mission for The Prince.'"
Catherine shakes her head with dismay but Velsa shrugs it away and gives her a hug.
"Look, I'm done with this now Mater; let me help you cook."
It still takes Martin a moment or so to make the connection. Unfortunately the strength of his brain seldom equals that of his chin.

"Greetings fine ladies. . .I would.."

"GET OUT!" Velsa knows she is whacking a wasp's nest by addressing a noble in this way, but Martin has really hurt her!
"YOU AND. . .AND,.."
Yes Velsa you have to say it.
"YOU AND HIS MAJESTY PRINCE SETH,"
There, despite your loathing for the blockhead monarch, misrepresenting such a title by applying it to a cracked-out crow-brain wasn't that hard was it Velsa? Okay continue, sorry.
"YOU SHOULD NOT INVOLVE MY DEAR MOTHER IN YOUR CRAZY TRICKS!"
Velsa didn't want her fury to sound so lame, but it did.
Despite this, Martin is not good at confrontations with women (it's only his second one ever) and cowers away from Velsa's harsh, accusing words.

After quickly pulling himself together, he turns to Catherine.
"Deepest apologies Madame, it appears you have learned of my motives wrongly and have met me at a disadvantage."
"What do you mean? I met you years ago, here at Praaven Castle!"
Catherine thinks Martin must be just as crazy as his friend.
The pair look at each other for a moment, equally confused by the ambiguity. But Velsa has had enough and brushes past Martin to get to the door.

"I have an errand to run." She whimpers.
Martin grabs her arm. "Please, let me explain!"

"Go on me love, let him explain!"
Catherine is a little keen to hear both sides of the story.

"If The Queen knew about us, she would likely have me banished, and worse for you no doubt! Seth can go to Hell, of that, I am sure he will. Please believe me Velsa, I have only you in my heart now!"

Velsa feels quite stupid for not realising Martin's motives.
"Listen, I have a plan for us," he continues.
Martin then goes on to recount his grand idea.
Velsa's eyes widen as she hears those glorious words:

"I want to pay your serf's merchet to Marcadius. What say you?"
"But, but how... we can't just marry, can we?" Velsa stammers.

Martin hushes his heartthrob with a warm embrace hoping to soften the imminent blow. He unties her hair, so as to behold her true beauty once more.
"It's not a marriage merchet as such; I will pay The King for your serfdom, to come and work for me. Then, in time, we shall wed in a left-handed ceremony, with my own... priest... What say you?"
Martin needn't have worried. Velsa is desperate to get away from Praaven Castle and the thought of becoming the lesser wife to a noble is too thrilling to even think about. She nods her reply to him, silently with pursed lips so as not to cry with happiness.

'The First Kiss of True Love?'

Catherine seems to know better. . .

"Oh, before I depart, I brought you a small gift, I'm sure you could use this."
Martin produces a loaded coin-purse from his garments.
"Just, don't shine so brightly as to question the Sun's force!" he warns.
Martin needs to learn how to speak 'Peasant' because Velsa has no idea he is instructing her to spend it wisely, and without creating questions.

Martin leaves and Velsa turns to her mother.

She feels like her body is vibrating with bursts of continuous euphoria, though the look on Catherine's face quickly brings her back to reality.
"You stupid girl! Can't you see? He's never going to marry you! You're as paid for as Mary Magdalene with Judas' Silver!"

Finale - Part 1

Elsbeth cannot believe what she is hearing!

There is no way in all of Christendom that she is going to lose her key-courier! It's highly unconventional but The Queen has to step in:

"Velsa Bennett is NOT for sale!"
The King looks shocked so Elsbeth explains:
"Velsa is the only person here who Princess Matilda likes; she is a vital part of our daughter's upbringing."

King Marcadius turns back to Martin, he understands how sensitive Elsbeth can be about their daughter's needs and cannot be bothered with another argument.
"You heard my wife Boaty!" he declares, "Ask me again in fifteen years!"

It's the next day before Martin finds the courage to tell his beloved the bad news. . .

"I'm sure we will find a way, perhaps you might fall out of favour with The Little Princess?"

But Velsa knows the truth:

Elsbeth's motives have nothing to do with that spoiled brat Matilda.

Velsa can't think of any option to untie herself from Queen Elsbeth.

The next day however, this happens:

"I'll be with you in a moment Sethy, I just need a strong word with a dis-obedient..." Elsbeth then turns on her loyal servant.

"HOW DARE YOU TRY AND LEAVE MY SERVICE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION? DO YOU THINK I AM STUPID? I know what's REALLY going on!" she hisses.

"Look at you, as if Lord Boatman could be serious about vermin like you! I saw him slobbering over you in the stables, a man with wrongful lust and a serf I cannot trust! Velsa, you are a disgrace to the nobility, and to this castle!"

Elsbeth can't resist exiting without one last nasty comment, just to keep the girl in her place:
"Ugh, Sir Boatman must have no sense of smell! I need to bathe from just speaking with her." She thinks aloud.

This blatant lie from Elsbeth tips Velsa's tolerance 'over the edge'.

"Perhaps it's time to tell my Martin all about you, you.... you.... evil queen!!"
Velsa needs to ask Martin for some better curse words.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

"What do you mean you have a plan?" Martin asks at their next secret liaison.
Velsa's ambition is pumping through her veins now she's realised there is a possible way out for her.

"Martin, you can read can't you?"

Martin nods, puzzled. After reassurances that Martin really does love her, and won't turn her in for High Treason no matter what,
Velsa hands him the latest letter which Elsbeth ordered to be delivered to Lord Simpson.

"You do realise we could both be hanged, disemboweled and quartered for even opening this, right?"
"Please, just tell me, what does it say?" implores the illiterate Velsa.

Martin can't believe the words on the parchment he is reading. An unspeakable composition of deceit notches its way harshly into his brain and he needs to take a moment to asborb the shock from it. He repeats the words slowly back to Velsa who obviously had no idea. An artist's impression of his visual imagination right now might look something like this:

(Nobody said the artist would be any good )

"But. . .but, I would have to petition Marcadius, and who knows what he could do...? Velsa, are you sure you want to go through with this? Her ladies in waiting will all suffer too, and.. and...!"
Velsa shuts him up mid-sentence: "Dash them all! I don't care!"

Elsbeth's ladies-in-waiting are always mean to Velsa because of the affections previously bestowed upon her by the queen. Here they were last week, making fun of the new dress Velsa had made with some of the money from Martin. Hearing that they could suffer too, dissuades Velsa from taking Martin's advice, and fuels her passion to become their equal.

"Just do everything exactly like I said and I'm certain we can pull this off, my love!" Velsa reassures her stunned fiance.
Her mind is clear and fixed on the prize: Before this week is out, Velsa Bennett is sure that she will be a free woman.

Season 1 - Finale part 2

After leaving Velsa, Martin's first stop is The Prince's chambers.
"Sethy! I've thought of an excellent prank we can pull, are you game?"
Seth frowns: "I don't know Boatman - you're no fun lately! Besides, I'm going to The Feast"

"Just hear me out! It's called 'Hide The Serf ', and you're going to love it!" Martin then relates Velsa's gambit to the prince who can't ever resist his own wicked instincts to cause mayhem.

"Oh this will be a riot!" Seth chuckles, "Wait til you see the look on Mother's face when she realises her servants no longer answer to her calls!"

"You're quite sure you know what to do Seth? Go straight for the girl and I will get the mother."
The prince is experiencing a moment of glory: "Listen, Old Boaty, I am the master of stratagems; nothing shall befall my most excellent of schemes!"
Typical Prince Seth - too stupid to remember the plan wasn't even his!

Moments later Velsa and the prince are headed for the hills.

The first part of her plan has worked and Velsa prays that the rest of it goes the way her and Martin had projected.

With Velsa safely out of harm's reach, Martin heads straight to Praaven Castle Barracks.
"I need you both to accompany me on an urgent quest to save the King!" Martin enthuses.

And so. . . .

It is the evening of the Feast of Lammas.

Martin should be dressed and seated already, but he's not here for all that.
"Your Highness, please hear me!. . . I . . ."

"If it's about that Velsa business, forget it!" The King interrupts.
"He's obsessed with her! Have some dignity Sir Boatman!" Pipes in the Queen.
Martin bows his head.
"Your Highness, I am here to save your life!"

The King is sure that this is yet another of Martin and Seth's pranks:
"Come on then Boaty, show me what evidence you have gathered for us this time!"

"A letter, written by the hand of your Queen...Sire"
The King beholds the scroll bearing Elsbeth's Royal Stamp and raises his eyebrows with anticipation.
"Well, this is quite a serious allegation you are making Sir Boatman; you had better read out this letter for The Court to bear witness!"

The Queen feels a little queasy at the thought of what is about to unfold. . .

Martin unties the scroll and reads aloud the introduction:
"To Our most cherished and beloved Lord Simpson..."
He pauses to look at his old friend and almost feels sorry for the sure fate that is about to await him. But he wants Velsa more; the sacrifice has to be made!
Martin continues with his narration, each sentence is received with gasps throughout the room.

Apparently Elsbeth is somewhat of a two-faced, power-hungry lunatic!

Her ultimate plan is astounding: Together with her lover, Simpson, the letter suggests how they plan to have both King Marcadius AND Prince Seth bumped off. . .

To make way for the succession of Princess Matilda - with the pair of them acting as Council and Regent Protectors for the young heiress to Praveen's Throne.

On hearing certain things about himself, which only the Queen could have known, Marcadius knows the letter is genuine and is enraged by it! He knocks over plates and chairs to appease his furious temper.
"IS THIS TRUE?!!" He thunders, "TELL ME WHY ELSBETH!! WHY?"

Elsbeth gives no consideration to her husband's vexed spleen; her anguish at seeing Lord Simpson trying to escape the same fate as hers leaves the Queen broken-hearted with disappointment and despair.

Fortunately he doesn't get far. Martin had instructed the guards to wait at the door and not let anybody leave.

"To The Tower with her!"

Paying attention now Elsbeth?

Then the King laughs: "I'm sure we will all look forward to seeing what actually falls out of that head of yours when it rolls from the axe!"

"How did you manage to get that letter Boaty?"
This is the moment Martin and Velsa had anticipated above all.
"Well, Your Highness, it was with the help of Velsa; the Queen was forcing her to deliver those scrolls and Velsa knew the Queen hated you and Seth, Sire! She was desperate to save you!"
Marcadius smiles: "Indeed she must be rewarded! Bring her before me, where is she?"
"Well, Sire, I had to take the precaution of protecting her from all of this..."
Then Martin tells the truth: "I love her, Your Highness, so I sent her to Boatman Manor with Prince Seth. I couldn't bear to have lost her if all of this had gone wrong. . ."

"Oh how delightful," utters the Queen "did you hear that? Seth has FINALLY left the castle alone!"
Lord Simpson doesn't care any more but Elsbeth turns back to face her soon-to-be widowed husband:

"If only you had read the letter previous to that one!" the Queen chortles.
"SHUT UP ELSBETH!" Simpson is hoping to somehow pin all of the blame onto her at their upcoming (pointless) trial in a last ditch effort to exempt himself from execution.
But Elsbeth is past the point of caring.

"It looks like my Matilda is going to rule after you, now that numb-skull son of ours has left the castle alone! Oh I'm so pleased that Lord Simspon paid those assassins in time!" She insanely cackles.

In fact, it couldn't have been any later or it wouldn't have happened at all! Simpson had made the bold decision to visit the docks looking for assassins only just last night! The two law-breaking, vagrants he employed were all too happy to take his gold, despite the shock on their faces when they learnt of their target.
"Just get it done and there will be more of that to come!" Simpson assured them.
The mean marauders realise the sort of money that's at stake and have the castle watched around the clock in anticipation of an opportunity.

(Which fortunately for them, came at the beginning of this chapter!)

It's a long ride to Boatman Manor so Seth allows Velsa and the horse to take a breather.
Both had failed to notice they were being followed from the moment they left Praaven.
The assassins close in. . .

Please let me know if you enjoyed (or didn't) and what you would like for season 2. I already have the ending sort of mapped out for these guys, would you like to see more from them, have any ideas about what could happen next? Or would you prefer a different medieval story with some of the other characters from Praaven that I have in mind?
