The Future Belongs To The Builders

There's a good spot for the new florist's here, next to two tiny shops (Pederson's Bakery and the former Newson toy stall) and across the road from the Holtwood New Market (built on the site of the old market after a calamity destroyed the place and freed up room for some better architecture). There are plenty of households nearby who might become customers, and it's not too far to walk from the nearer farms. Maybe if the shop can gain a good reputation, members of the nobility might condescend to drop in!

Note the water bowl for dogs outside. Quiet pets are welcome, however we must ask that large dogs with enthusiastic tails wait outside - for the safety of our vases.

The shop stocks every kind of cut flowers: daisies, tulips, daffodils, wildflowers, roses, freesias, miltonias and snapdragons. We also have a selection of potted flowering plants, ferns and many types of succulents. If you're looking for a pot or planter to grow your own flowers, we have every possible size in stock.

Order your flowers ahead of time and pick them up from the counter, or we can do up a bouquet on the spot. Choose your own ribbon from our selection of at least five colours!

This large arrangement by the window would be ideal for special occasions. We can discuss colours and prices to suit your event. If you're after something long-lasting, how about a basket of dried flowers and grasses?

You might like to buy a vase or two - there are so many sizes and shapes to choose from!

Oh, that corner? Well, we like to have something for all tastes. Not everyone likes orange, but we do have orange flowers available for those of such a persuasion - we prefer to keep them over here, where they are less likely to offend customers of delicate sensibilities. A discreet bag can be arranged to conceal any lurid orange purchases so they don't frighten horses in the street.

The shop is a little on the small side, but well lit and well equipped. We're up with the very latest technologies: you can place your order by scroll-in-a-box as well as in person.

This area is for staff only. Here's where we assemble all our bouquets. The table does double duty as a work surface and for staff meals.

The workroom has a stove for preparing meals (and of course a pot of tea now and then), a basin for washing up and a pantry. Those skillets on the wall are a token of appreciation from the Holtwood volunteer fire brigade - of course we pay to support their work. The back door leads to the patio and greenhouse.

The patio is a lovely place for a break when weather allows. Here also is the outhouse, which customers are welcome to use if they find themselves caught short. Not all flowers get sold while they're still fresh, so we have a compost bin inside the greenhouse to dispose of any that get a bit past their best. Please don't look at that barrel by the back door - someone should have composted those dead flowers before you got here!

We can't grow all our own flowers - we have most of them delivered - but it can be very handy to have a few live flowers on hand to fill out a bouquet. And of course florists have an interest in flowers and like to try out new varieties in here.

It's very convenient that there's a line of sight from the break room chair, past the till, to the front door - if there's a lull in the flow of customers, there might be a moment to sit and read a book until the bell jangles again.
