You can know for certain if townies are still generating by checking in SimPE. Open the Sim Browser (Tools / Neighborhood / Sim Browser). Check the Townies box at the top of the Window and clear the other boxes. It will show thumbnail pictures of all the townies in your game (including Dormies and Downtownies). You can count them. By default the Sim Browser sorts then in order of Instance number, so the last one will be the newest one added. Take a note of who it is, and what his/her Instance number is. Check again after a few play sessions. If you find more townies added to the end of the list, then new ones are indeed being generated. In the main part of SimPE you can also sort the Sim Descriptions (SDSC) in order of Instance number. The last one in the list will be the newest Sim in the Neighbourhood. Take a note of their Instance number. When you check again in the future, any townies with a higher Instance number must be new.

Personally I like lots of townies in my game, but I don't think I would like the social class townies. They sound too stereotypical for me. For me it's a good enough reason not to get Apartment Life. I also don't want my neighbourhoods zoned into rich and poor areas. I like to see rich and poor, playables and townies socialising together just because they like each other. It's nice to see Juliette Capp, Grand Duchess of Veronaville, making friends with a recently arrived townie teen.

All Sims are beautiful -- even the ugly ones.

You need to start a hood with an empty Magic subhood if you don't want them included in the first place. IMO, there is an unreasonable amount of social townies included in the Magic subhood, 50 of them in total, see list here:

https://sims.fandom.com/wiki/Magic_(neighborhood)

I found out that the game will generate the social townies from the templates in a totally empty hood, even if you never move a sim into an apartment building. I believe that it happens at the moment you make or place an apartment lot. I can't be totally sure, but I think this is when it happens.

If you have notownieregen, I believe they only get generated when you play an apartment lot with a playable sim and the game needs to create a neighbour. This is how it seemed to work in my game with notownieregen, anyway.

So, if you prefer them not to generate at all, you need a mod to suppress them:

You can choose between "no townie neighbors" as linked earlier in the thread, which prevents non playable sims moving into empty apartments at all,
OR "townie apartment resisents" by Cyjon, which allows normal townies to be used as apartment neighbours in place of AL social townies.

If there are no townies to use as neighbours, Cyjon's mod will create them, even if you have notownierespawn. It creates ordinary townies, not social townies.

There are a couple of newer mods now too which affect apartment neighbours and/or AL social townie spawning:

Midgethetree's Townie and NPC Apartment Residents ----> Because this DOES allow social townies as apartment neighbours, it doesn't stop them from spawning when the game needs a new apartment neighbour.

This new mod which completely prevents them from spawning at all. I believe you can use this in conjunction with the other mods, but you might only need it if you DON'T use notownieregen by Pescado. This mod does not change who will appear as a neighbour, though. So if for example, you move a sim into an apartment building and there are six empty units, but you only have three social townies, three of the units will be occupied with those social townies, and the other three units will remain empty.

(It took me a while to work out how to avoid them because I find them very annoying).

And yes they appear as walkbys as well as being used as apartment neighbours. In fact, they are weighted to be more common as walkbys, because for some reason Maxis thought that would be fun or maybe they just liked spamming the features of later EPs so that they totally override any reasonable gameplay.

I'd appreciate links to any or all mods that prevents the game from generating new NPCs, such as cashiers (meaning sims the game just randomly generates, not premade NPCs).
Thanks

As others have suggested, you can definitely disable the AP Life stealthhood, and that should stop them from appearing.

However, in my case, I simply forgot once again to do that, so something I'm planning to do in my newest neighborhood is to move in one social group at a time's worth of social class townies, age them down with simblender, and put them up for adoption in the neighborhood so that they have a second chance to exist outside of me hating their invasion of my normal neighborhood. I might recognize them as adults, but after growing up as someone completely different, I'm hoping I'll completely forget who they're supposed to be.

Hello people, for some reason, this mod seems to be working, as I haven't seen any generated in a while.

Which mod? And you can only say that it's working if you have an apartment with some free spaces, to see who ends up living there.

"Notownieregen" is the mod I use. And this wasn't related to apartment neighbours, they were just appearing in the general neighbourhood. So it should be fixed

I just had to add that I found another mod which is another option if you want someone different for your apartment neighbours: NPCs as apartment neighbours

https://midgethetree.tumblr.com/pos...-share-the-safe

Just to explain/clarify one last time (then I'll go away because maybe I'm being annoying)

The game has a template lot of Social Townies which come with the subhood "Magic" which is part of Apartment Life. This is Ethan Barratt, Gretchen Chin, Lyndsay Louie, Christian Love, Jace Maceravitch etc. They get dumped into every hood that you have unless you disable or replace the "Magic" stealth hood. Whether you have met them or not, they will be there - you can see them in SimPE.

They will wander around the neighbourhood, as walkbys and on community lots, and may come home with sims as work friends etc. They are only adults, no kids/teens.

But ALSO - when you move a sim into an apartment with vacant units, these "Social Townies" will move in as your neighbours. An apartment has a "Lot Class" which is where the game tries to figure out if these are lower-class, scummy apartments, high-class luxury apartments, or middle-class normal apartments. It will then choose an appropriate social class of social townie to move in. Lower class apartments get Gearheads and Bohemians. Middle class get Bohemian, Jocks and Techs. Upper class get Techs and Socialites. That means (from the original template dump) you have a pool of 20-30 for each lot class, so even though some overlap, you should not run out of apartment neighbours too quickly.

Apparently the game is also supposed to figure out the "class" of community lots with some kind of similar function and cause the social townies to appear (or not) here as well.

New social townies ONLY get generated in the following scenario (assuming no mods):

- You move a playable sim into an apartment building
- The apartment building has vacant units
- All other social townies of the allowed social class are already neighbours somewhere else, have been made playable, or have not been added (because you replaced the Magic secret subhood).

In this case the game will generate the appropriate amount of social townies to fill the remaining vacant units.

Notownieregen will not stop Social Townies from being generated, it only stops normal townies. But social townies only get generated anyway in the scenario that you don't have enough social townies of the appropriate class to be your apartment neighbours. I think what you're seeing is a coincidence; you've already seen all/most of the default social townies, so it feels like they have "stopped generating" but they weren't generating in the first place; you were just coming across the 50 default social townies that Magic added to your hood.

So, if you want to play apartments then you will find that the already-generated social townies will be used as neighbours there, unless you use one of the following three mods (linked earlier in thread):

No apartment neighbours - makes empty units stay empty
Townie Apartment Neighbours - uses (and will generate if necessary) normal, non-social-group townies to fill empty apartment units.
NPC Apartment neighbouts - uses a mixture of NPCs, townies and social townies.

I don't know what Midge's mod does if there isn't enough eligible sims to fill the empty unit - I would ask her but I have no clue how tumblr works.
