Picture this: a thread, any thread. Someone writes something mildly interesting, and long. Please don't actually pay attention to what this says.

I also mention what I had for breakfast today and how I'm disproving the weather.

It's gibberish really, you can skip this entire quote. I'm just trying to make a point.

My cats tear all my shirts with their long claws.

Another paragraph! Wow.

I just discovered a very delicious spread, containing mango, papaya and curry. It's super delicious!

I sure am the author of this text and I sure did give myself the time and thought into putting this long text up on the internet. Surely no-one would want to read this twice...

And then, someone wanting to talk to the original poster directly, hits the reply button...

That's great! I love your cats.

I even think there's a forum rule discouraging users from quoting entire posts in their replies, but it's not enforced nor it makes sense to me to report users for doing this (there are far more serious things to report than post formatting).

Since there already is a functionality where @ -ing someone pings the user that they've been mentioned, how about we introduce a new button at the bottom-right of each post?

So far, I see buttons Reply and Report. The new buttons and their functionalities would be:

- Reply: the user's reply box opens, coming prefilled with "@topp " and the user can continue typing their response. So, instead of there being a wall of text + "I love your cats," the reply posts made this way would read "@topp That's great! I love your cats."

- Quote: the standard behavior of today's Reply button. The user's reply box opens, coming prefilled with the entire existing post surrounded in [quote]. Useful for trimming out the excess text and only focusing on a few lines at a time for further analysis or ridiculing.

- Report: what it's always been doing.

Jonain päivänä mä toivon, että pääsen käymään Suomessa – ja heti perillä unohdan kaiken, mitä oon oppinut suomen kielestä, ja sanon vaan 'kahvia'.
