Default Adding custom text to an object in game
I'm hoping someone can help me with this.

I'm trying to make a PhD degree certificate, and when obtained in game I want it to ask for a title, and then save that text so that when the certificate is viewed a text notification comes up to say "The degree of Doctor of Philosophy was awarded to $Fullname for a thesis entitled "TITLE"", where TITLE is replaced with whatever text I entered.

I can make the degree certificate - I'll just clone the existing one. I can add/ adjust the code to display the rest of the message as required. I can also make something buyable to give out the degrees in the first place. I don't know how to get text stored in the new object, and include it appropriately when needed. It should be possible - womrats can get names and those names appear for the rest of their lifetime. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, I don't want the degree certificate to be buyable from the catalog. What am I looking for to make that not happen?

To make something not buyable you remove function and room sorting flags in OBJD. You know what I mean? Those fields in the beginning on Raw tab. Zero out the community, downtown and holiday sorts while you're at it.

To do a title, would be a bit more complicated. In theory, you could use the novel naming dialogue (look up the novel writing interaction to see how it's used) and then use string substitutions to insert that into your own notification. That's what I've got off the top of my head

Thanks, I know what you mean.

Novel naming dialogue sounds like a good idea. I'd been trying to look at the Womrat cage (because you can name them) but not finding anything useful - novel naming is much closer to what I'm trying to do, and hopefully I can work out what it's doing and copy it. And thank you for the wiki link.
