How does the game handle fonts?
This is a rather long post, but please bear with me. I recently tried to change the game font using a mod and I had problems. I play the game in Greek and I use a mod to override the default font, because I don't like how it looks. It's
this one by
Karasshu to be specific
(I know it's meant to be used with the Russian localization, however the two languages are put under the same category in the game files, Western scripts, so the mod affects Greek as well). While the font looks good and is totally readable, I've started to miss the look of the English font (
Helvetica Rounded Bold) and a coupe of weeks ago I tried editing the mod in
S3PE by replacing the
Liberation Sans ttf with
Proxima Soft, which is the closest to
Helvetica Rounded I've managed to find. However, when I put the edited package file into my mods folder, the text rendering was completely screwed up and almost all of the Greek characters were rendered as an underscore. At first I thought there was something wrong with the file I had downloaded but every version of the font I tested looked the same. So then I tried other similar looking fonts (they were all rounded ones) and got the same results. Lastly, I tested non-rounded fonts and some of them had the same issue as the rounded fonts. After that, I stopped trying to change the font.
Today, I had a small "epiphany" and downloaded
OhRudi's
Font Replacement. What it does is override the default English font and so I made my own version by replacing
The Sim Sans with
Proxima Soft, as described at the mod's page. Then I switched the game language to English using
s3lc by
MarkJS. The font looked fine, no rendering issues and any sim names where I had used Greek characters in also looked fine. This proved that the font isn't at fault, cause if it was then the rendering issue would persist even when the game language was switched to English. The problem must either lie with
Karasshu's mod (which I consider unlikely, given it's a very simple mod) or the the way
the game handles fonts. I believe is the latter.
I have no knowledge of the game's inner workings, so I thought I could ask here about this. It's probably a long shot but if anyone could provide me with insight on the game's font handling, I'd be eternally grateful, cause I'd really like to use Proxima Soft in my Greek game.
