Default Splotchy texture on curled hair
Hi all!

Looking for some help with this poly reduced hair that I'm currently working on. There's really unflattering black splotches that only affect the front strands that curl in opposite directions. I've attached pictures as well as the files if anyone is able to take a look and give some guidance on how to fix it.

You somehow got the normals flipped on half of those hair strands. I used the mesh without backfaces.

Turn on face orientation, and you can see it.

Select those strands, then top tabs Mesh> Normals> Recalculate Outside.

Next, select all, and recalculate normals.

And finally, make your backfaces.

[Edit:] Oops, LadySmoks beat me to it while I was typing :P

You can see the issue here on the no-backfaces mesh, the normals have been flipped on part of the mesh when they should all be on the same side.


In Blender, select the two hair strands and go to Mesh > Normals > Recalculate Outside
Then go to Mesh > Normals > Average > Face Area to smooth out the normals.
Then it's fixed

One other note, the mesh in the package has flickering backfaces which can also cause visual errors.
I'd recommend redoing the backfaces after fixing the mesh by simply duplicating the entire thing (Object Mode, select in scene collection and CTRL C then CTRL V), using Normals > Flip on the duplicate, deleting any parts of the duplicate that don't need backfaces, then select the original, CTRL+ click the dupe, and CTRL J to Join them. When you rotate the camera with Face Orientation on, there should no longer be any flicker.
