Create a World on Linux with wine - gets to splash screen and exits

Create a World installs fine, runs, gets to the splash screen, then exits with

Code:

err:listview:LISTVIEW_WindowProc unknown msg 109d, wp 0, lp 0

which really doesn't seem to mean a whole lot after I've scoured the internet for it.

I've been running the game itself in wine (with a few tweaks) for a long time and it runs fine (more or less - with some standard issues that seem to be present even on Windows machines).

I have two versions of the game I could work with, 1.67 (Steam) and 1.34 (not Steam).
For the Steam version, I've used the registry edit workaround in order to get it to install.
For the 1.34 version, I've found that I might need an older version of CAW (1.16) but I cannot find a link to download it and try that out.
I get to the same issue in both.

I've installed it on the same drive but in a non-standard location.

CAW runs as administrator (as is standard for wine).

The Default.local.ini file is not present.

Tried emulating XP and Windows 7. My game usually runs with wine emulating 7 (10 has an issue with remembering in-game settings).

Tried running in windowed mode.

Tried running with WINEDEBUG=all-trace to get what seem to be some more uninspiring generic wine messages:

I'm using:
- a wine prefix that is used by The Sims 3 and The Sims 3 only.
- wine-9.0 (Ubuntu 9.0~repack-4build3)
- wine-mono 11.0 (installed from the .msi with wine uninstaller - wine msiexec to be exact)

I've managed to get this far and do a bunch of experiments thanks to the excellent threads on this forum and the sims wiki. Hoping for a bit of an extra push now - I would really appreciate any tips as I'd really like to play around with CAW but am at my wit's end

I know zero about wine, but why are you just not using standard installs and play like pretty much everyone else? Is your game a legit one? Others can advise more about this.

I just don't own a machine with Windows on it, or a copy of Windows. Using wine to emulate games is not at all uncommon for people who use Linux.
