Chapter 13

‘ Shadee Amelia Evans!’ a shrill voice erupted suddenly.

In a quick struggle to get off Shadee, Dirk landed on the floor with a loud thud and began to fume wildly at his pants’ zip, trying to not be seen by the furious old lady. Shadee on the other hand tried to get on her feet and face Gypsy, but decided it was safer if she stayed on the couch.

‘What in God’s name is happening here?!?’ it was the first time that Shadee had ever seen her grandma that angry. Her eyes were narrowed to slits and throwing the girl poisonous looks. She very much resembled a cat at that moment.

‘We were…we just…we were watching TV!’

Shadee knew she had just given the most stupid answer ever and she also knew perfectly well that her grandma knew exactly what they had been doing.

‘Young man, I think it’s time for you to leave.’ Gypsy said with a very stern, but calm voice. Dirk gave up trying to zip his pants up. He threw Shadee an apologetical look, wished the old lady a “pleasant evening” and staggered out of the house.

A few minutes of silence passed in which grandma Gypsy just stared at Shadee and Shadee tried to stare back, unable to focus her eyes.

‘I am very aware of the fact that you are almost a woman now and this is something perfectly normal for people your age, but you have disappointed me deeply!’ the old woman began, keeping her cool tone ‘You know your grandfather is sick, you know he always gets depressive over every little thing and you know he doesn’t have much time to live! All can think of you now is that you’re a selfish little child that only think about getting “candy”, while everyone else is starving around him.’

‘It’s not fair, grandma!’ she slurred, her eyes filling with tears of embarrassment ‘I’m tired of always thinking of everyone else first!’

‘You reek of alcohol.’ Gypsy replied ignoring her statement ‘You’ve never been drunk your whole life! You’ve really disappointed me! Just go to your room!’

She turned on her heel and returned to her sleeping husband, leaving Shadee all alone in the darkness.

‘-and now I just feel terrible!’ Shadee sighed after having told the story of the previous night to Sebastien and Holly.

‘So…let me get this’ started Sebastien ‘You were as drunk as h*ll and just spontaneously decided to have sex for the very first time with that jerk? I really can’t believe your story! Did that son of a b*tch force you? I’m gonna rip his-’

‘No one forced me to do anything, Seb! But that’s not the important thing. My grandma won’t even look at me!’

‘Of course it’s important!’ Sebastien pressed on, not wanting to leave the matters as they were ‘I’ve told you a million times, Dork doesn’t deserve you! And now he even gets you in trouble because he’s too d*mn h*rny!’

‘Stop calling him that! And leave him out of this now! I just don’t understand why grandma got so angry. And I’m scared…does she know something I don’t know about grandpa?’

‘Shadee, you must understand how she’s feeling.’ Holly sighed and looked her friend in the eyes ‘It’s her husband you’re talking about in there. Of course she gets upset over any little thing that might disturb him!’

‘Yeah that!’ Sebastien mingled. He had never been too good at understanding feelings ‘And I’m sure she doesn’t approve of the fact that her granddaughter is dating that a**hole!’

Shadee rolled her eyes and completely ignored him.

‘Let’s just change the subject, okay?’ Holly came up with the idea ‘Let’s talk about something enjoyable, like the Senior Ball!’

‘I’m determined to have a blast, whatever the cost!’ Shadee grinned ‘You don’t exactly finish highschool every day, right? Who are you two going with?’

‘Well, no one’s asked me until now and I don’t think anyone will ask from now on.’ Holly smiled bitterly and stared at the table, unable to look any of them in the eyes.

‘I’m not going with anyone either.’ Seb answered curtly ‘I haven’t dated ever since the “Lainey” incident, so we could go together.’ He put his hand on Holly’s and smiled warmly.

He could be the biggest prat sometime Shadee thought looking at the two of them but he has the gift of making one feel loved!

‘Would you do that for me?’ Holly’s eyes widened with joy ‘You’re the best, Seb!’

‘That leaves you and Dork as a pair, right?’ Sebastien smirked, turning to Shadee.

‘For the millionth time, stop calling him those stupid names! You don’t even have a reason to be such a jerk! He has been nothing but nice and loyal to me ever since day one!’

‘Yeah and he walks past me and Holly pretending we are air!’

‘You don’t help the situation much either! You do remember that he tried to be friendly at the beginning, but you always made fun of him and looked at him as though he were the worst piece of crap. People have limits, you know!’ Shadee stood up from her chair and crossed her arms defensively.

Sebastien stood up too and continued exasperated.

‘I don’t trust him, Shadee! He’s far too stupid and amenable. He would never resist a chick with a short skirt, believe me! And someday you’ll remember I told you this and you’ll-’

‘Okay, okay! Break it up!’ Holly interrupted their heated discussion ‘Why do you have to argue over this every single time we meet?’

‘He’s the one that starts every time, calling Dirk names and stuff!’

‘That’s because you’re too blind to notice he’s-’

‘Why are you doing this Sebastien? Why do you always make me choose between my friends and my boyfriend? It never happened like this when you were with Lainey!’

‘That’s because we all thought Lainey was an angel, before we found out the truth!’

‘I’m going back home!’ Shadee shook her head and gave Sebastien one last cold look before turning on her heel and walked out of the cafe .
