1. Processing Plant Worker

Well, you got your first job, and its not badly paid. BUT. Standing for hours at a time in a rubber apron, slitting open the bellies of passing fish on a production line and pulling their intestines out, is not your idea of glamorous work. You permanently smell of fish guts and yearn for the great outdoors.
Mon – Friday, 7.a.m. - 3.p.m. £120

2. Fish Farm Worker

It is some relief to have got an outdoor job. You work outside in all weathers, feeding the fish and checking their health, cleaning out the filters on their traps and checking water quality. Its a quite interesting job, but a bit isolated.

3. Clam Digger

Your working life is now spent on remote beaches digging up shellfish and wading through rock pools, feeling for them with your feet. Its a pleasant way to spend a working day (in summer) but still very isolated.

4. Line Fisherman

You now earn your living catching salmon and bass with rod and line. You are less isolated now, there are other fishermen nearby to talk to. However, your income is very uncertain, it all depends on what you can catch.

5. Lobster Boat Crew

You have been offered the opportunity to go to sea, working as a hand on a lobster boat. You cut bait, bait pots, haul in the catch and retrieve the lobsters. Be careful! Those things can nip.

6. Fishing trawler deckhand

With your lobster boat experience, you have landed a place on a bigger fishing vessel. It is much better paid, however you are away at sea for days, or even weeks at a time. The work is hard and sometimes dangerous, but you are learning useful skills in navigation, engineering and even cooking. While at sea, you live in very close proximity to the rest of the crew. To think you were ever lonely!

7. Fishing trawler skipper

As skipper of the trawler, you are responsible for deciding where the trawler goes to fish and what fish it goes for. If you are wrong, the catch will be small and the trip will not turn a profit. You need to have a good knowledge of fish and seamanship, be decisive, and keep a cool head in an emergency.

8. Sport Fishing Charter Boat Operator

With your profits as a trawler skipper, you have bought your own boat! But instead of a commercial fishing boat, you have decided to go for the glamorous end of the fishing industry, hiring out to parties of keen amateur fishermen. Your knowledge of the sea and fishing is still very important as they will expect a good haul. However, your hospitality and people skills need to come to the fore now, as your diary will only stay full of bookings if all your punters have a great time.

9. Fish market owner

You have made a career move back onto dry land, by starting a wholesale fish market. You buy fish and shellfish from the fishing boats and sell them on to restaurants and food shops. It takes a good business brain, but your knowledge of fish and the fishing industry give you a good start, and you have learned a lot about restaurants and food from your charter boat customers. For the first time you are working office hours indoors, and can have a social life outside of work.

10. Fishing Industry Expert.

Due to your in depth experience of many aspects of the fishing industry, you are now widely acknowledged to be an expert. You write articles, and attend conferences. Governments take your views into account when creating legislation that will affect the fishing industry, and you have become an international expert witness, called to give evidence at enquiries and trials that relate to fishing activities . You start to wonder if there might be a market for your autobiography – but perhaps not.
