Update: 5 Sep 2026
  • Added a flavor that will also let you invite a unicorn to your family without a need to max out the Wildlife skill (as requested long, long ago by soul reaper magnum). Use only one flavor at a time. You will still have to maintain a relationship without that unicorn though. Feel free to request other flavors regarding strays, wild horses, and unicorns.
I've also seen some comments that the option 'Adopt Stray' is not available even when using this mod. After playing for a while, I've come to a conclusion that it can still happen when one of the following scenarios takes place (with the possibility of a mod conflict excluded, of course):
  • A stray is sleeping. Naturally, other interactions won't do the thing either - wake it up first.
  • A stray is going home. (No matter how weird it sounds, but still.) This is a game-controlled situation, and nothing can be done about it as the parameters that define the time of a stray presence on a lot are irrelevant to this mod and out of our in-game control. I feel for you, and good luck when you meet a stray next time!
  • A stray is busy with other stuff. (I don't know the exact wording in English, but the idea is that it's involved in some activities.) I've seen this message only once or twice, and I'm still not sure what actvities are meant. We don't know a lot about the game yet.
In brief, if you meet a stray that you want to adopt, make sure that at least any other interaction (stroke, feed etc.) is doable - if you're able to do this one, you'll be able to adopt it, too.

I also highly recommend using simler90's Gameplay Core Mod. Apart from all other benefits it grants, its current version includes a number of fixes related to strays, which vastly improve the relevant gaming experience.
Hello everyone!

TL;DR: I was surprised that the issue of stray adoption was not addressed for all these years of the Sims 3 existence in terms of modding, so I decided to look into it, and it turned out to be easier than it seemed. Go and grab them all now!

Let's admit that adoption of a stray in The Sims 3 is a total nightmare. It requires too much time and efforts and still can eventually leave you holding the bag. The whole situation is too far from natural, and, to be honest, I don't believe that strays are worth going above and beyond for them. Indeed, there are numerous guides available online telling you how far you should go to convince that cat or dog to stay with you, but is it how it all really should be?

So, this simple mod eliminates the check for meeting criteria for the option "Adopt Stray" to appear. Now the option is available right ahead, and as soon as you come across a stray and manage to get in contact with it, it will be there - you don't need to maintain a relationship with the animal beforehand.

Taking into account the fact that you can actually fulfill the Animal Rescuer LTW in one day by just calling to the pet shelter and adopting all six guys from there, I believe that this mod brings no imbalance to the game, as it's already quite a rare event to meet a stray without doing anything special for that. On the other hand, using cheat codes to add a stray to a family, which is quite common in the community, is unlikely to count towards the meter of strays adopted by your sim, so this can serve as a decent alternative.

Though it may sound a bit redundant, this mod definitely needs the Pets EP.

This mod will conflict with anything that edits the SocialData_EP5 XML resource.

Credits to you-will-never-find-me-anymore for the wonderful screenshot of a stray dog that I've never been able to properly make on my own.

Happy adopting and simming!
