Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess. She was the most beautiful princess in the world, and everyone loved her. She had two annoying sisters: Princess Big Mouth and Princess Crybaby. Princess Big Mouth was always complaining, and Princess Crybaby was always crying about one thing or another. They weren’t as pretty as the beautiful princess. The beautiful princess did not like her sisters because they acted like they were better than she was. Princess Big Mouth acted like she was so big because she did good in school, and Princess Crybaby was Daddy’s favorite, somehow. The beautiful princess couldn’t wait to grow up and get out of the castle and leave all of the selfish people in her family. Some people could just be so irritating!

There once was a young girl who knew and understood too much. Because she knew more than most people her age, she was unhappy. She knew just how bad the world could be, despite what everyone told her. She knew that the world wasn’t fair or kind. She knew that people could be cruel and unfair. She knew that people could get married and later act like they hated each other. The girl wished she could be like everyone else. She wished she could just pretend life was good, like everyone else. She wished she didn’t know what life was really like. But she could not. And so, she suffered at the hands of those who believed she was a bad person. They thought she was a bad person because she did not view the world in the same manner that they did. They said she was a witch. They called her names and did mean things to her. But no matter how hard she tried, she continued to see the world as it truly was.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl. She had a daddy who loved her, a mommy who seemed to be sad or angry most of the time, a big sister who put on makeup when she wasn’t supposed to, and a big sister who knew everything. But the little girl was sad. She knew that her family wasn’t as happy as they pretended to be when other people were around. Her mommy and daddy argued a lot, her smart sister cried in her room, and her makeup-loving sister tried to pretend everything was okay when it wasn’t. The little girl didn’t understand why things were this way. Were all families like this? Did all mommies and daddies argue like this? Were all brothers and sisters so strange and unhappy? The little girl didn’t know. She wished she did.

Once, there was a boy. His mom and dad died, and he was sent to live with a family member who he didn’t know. The family member was his aunt, his dad’s sister. She was a sad and lonely woman, but she was kind to the boy. But the boy could see that she was still sad because of her husband’s death. Even as she played video games with him and helped him with his homework, he could see that she wasn’t as happy as she should be. Every day, the boy wondered if he was unwelcome in her home. She said that she was happy to care for him, but still, he wondered if this was true. He knew that she did not want children. Was he a burden? He did not know, and she did not tell him.
