Ophelia opened the door, and when she saw who it was, her first instinct was to slam the door and run. Instead, she stood, and asked, in the most polite voice she could muster up, “Well, hello, Tacita, what brings you here?”

“You know why I’m here,” Tacita shot back. “I’m here to take back what’s mine.”

“Yours?”

“Damn right. You can have the band, for all I care. Be their brilliant little ingénue with the voice of f***ing gold who all the fans adore. But I want my daughter.”

“Ah, so after so many years, you’re going to just up and decide to be a mother to her?” Ophelia responded, frowning.

“You have no legal rights, Ophelia. You never adopted her--”

“--Even though Cy and I offered several times,” Ophelia interrupted.

“She’s my daughter, Ophelia. Not yours. You made your choices, and I made mine. Now, if you are going to prevent me from seeing Lisa, I will have to call the authorities. I’m sure we both don’t want that, now, do we?”

Scowling, Ophelia stepped back to allow Tacita entrance into her home. Tacita stormed through the front door and into the living room, where Cy and Lisa were playing a video game.

“I’m going to beat you!” Lisa squealed, grinning at Cy.

Her smile quickly vanished when she saw Tacita, followed by a frowning Ophelia.

“Pause the game, kiddo,” Cy whispered, gently nudging Lisa. She put a protective arm around the child and looked up at Tacita. To the women, she added, “So, what’s this about?”

“I’m here for my daughter,” Tacita responded.

“Why now? You’ve never wanted to spend more than a few hours with her before,” Cy replied, not releasing her grip on Lisa. Lisa shrunk behind Cy, peering nervously at Tacita.

“My reasons are of no importance to you,” Tacita said calmly.

“They are of every importance to us,” Ophelia spoke up. “For all intents and purposes, Lisa is our child. Maybe not legally, but you expect us to just give up a child we’ve raised pretty much since birth…”

“Not to mention that you’re not exactly the best role model,” Cy added.

“Oh, God, not you, too,” Tacita groaned. “Look, I’m willing to drop the band and even enter rehab. Give me a chance.”

Cy shook her head, and Ophelia said, “Tacita, it might be best if--”

“If you don’t comply, I can always call the police. Say that I’m being prevented from taking my child home by two people who have no legal rights to her.”

“I can’t believe you would sink so low…” Cy whispered, glaring at Tacita.
